3.2 is currently the highest available on a phone, my SE K800i takes fantastic pictures, my wifes N80 is good but not as good as the K800i.
Apparently the next K series phone from SE will have a 5Mp camera in it, i honestly believe the K800 is the best phone currently on the market though, you wont regret getting one unless you're used to Nokias but then again the N80, etc run on Symbian which if you're not used to that is a total pain.

If you want to take loads of pictures of your offspring Jamie - congrats by the way - have you considered buying a dedicated machine for this purpose, I think it's called a camera

I hve a Nokia N80, awesome pictures, but the video on there is also exceptionally good for a mobile phone. I'm not sure but I think the video recording on it is about VGA resolution.

Yeah, its decent for a phone, but for pics of your baby, wouldn't you want a dedicated camera to do a proper job? You can get decent spec without spending a fortune

Samsung are going to release a 12mp camera phone at some point. But that could be in a year or two.

Don't confuse resolution with quality. They are very different in my opinion.

Had a Canon 4Meg A80 camera and broke it, got a 7Meg Olympus and frankly its awful and doesn't come near the Canon.

Totally agree. There is more to picture quality than just the number of pixels - lens quality, image processing, exposure control all need to be taken into account. Most mobile phone lenses are rubbish compared to a camera (that's even if they are clean!). The zoom is usually digital, so applying any zoom to a picture will make the image suffer. Also, the image processing software in the phone will be very basic and probably over-compress the image to jpeg format.
If you want to take half decent photos then get a camera. A mobile phone will never be able to match the image quality of a dedicated digital camera.

The new Nokia due out in the next few month is 5 megapixel if that means anything to you. Im like most fools out there I just follow the pixel numbers.

I had the Sony k800i (3.2Mp), although it was horrible as a phone, it took a great picture due to the 'real' flash

At the mometn the n73 and k800i are the best for pics with the n80 close behind, all are around 3 megapixel. The n95 has been officially released with a 5 megapixel camera but it isnt out in the shops yet (that i can find) and the networks havent finished testing it and filling it with crap yet.

Re: upgrading my phone is 3.2 Megapixel classed as good picture Quality ?

Don't be lured into pixel counts IMHO. For general photography I still rely on my humble EAgfa 1280 camera. And it only does its 1.280 Megapixels by interpolation, it's actually more like 0.96 if I recall correctly. But it has a fantastic lens, and does its job really well. Until it breaks I cannot think of a reason to replace it (other than the fact it can't recognise a Smart Media card bigger than 8Mb )

So pick a phone with a recognised good picture quality, rather than pixel counts

Dave

I completely agree about the SE K800i. I did not use the camera features at all until very recently when 9 days ago my son was born. Since then I've been snapping away. I use a camera too, but the K800i is so convenient as I can take a photo near instantly withougt waiting for my Pwershot G2 to power up etc. Definitely recommended!

the main factor that determines the quality of a photo is the optics. if it is on a phone normally there is not much space for good optics so the quality of the photo is not great.

if you want a device that can take good quality photos and make calls get a phone, a decent digital camera and some super glue

As people have been saying it is all about optics.

Personally i prefer the n73 (bug free now with latest firmware) over the K800i. It just feels more camera like.
