Re: Debranding N70 and Music edition upgrade for free.

I'm confused why T-Mobile & Orange UK will not let us use other SIMs in their contract phones.
I'm currently on an 18 month contract and thanks to this policy I have to take 2 phones on holiday. Is the £500+ not enough money for me to actually do what I want with the phone?

I really want to debrand my N70!

Steve

Re: Debranding N70 and Music edition upgrade for free.

1) debranding will not unlock your phone to allow any sim to be used

2) paying £20 to Orange or T-Mobile to get phone unlocked is a lot cheaper than if the networks didnt subsidise the cost of the handset in the first place (the reason why it is locked), otherwise you would have had to pay £250-£300 for the phone in the first place

you cant have it all ways

Re: Debranding N70 and Music edition upgrade for free.

I was lucky, T-Mobile did not brand my N70, unlike Vodaphone.
I still think that with paying £500+ for a contract I should not have to pay another £20 to get the phone unlocked, I've already paid for the phone twice over.
Vodaphone/O2 UK have not network locked any phones I've had before, but apparently they do make a message with their branding.

Re: Debranding N70 and Music edition upgrade for free.

Firstly understand this is deemed quite risky. If it goes wrong you will kill your phone. Don't blame me if this happens. Mine worked fine but i cant guarantee yours will. It will not unlock your phone but will debrand it from orange. I no longer have the silly front page but the original one.
1 - Firstly, you need to get all the software installed. You will need nokia pc suite installed, Nokia Software Updater (NSU) and a program called Nemesis service suite beta (NSS) (Google it). When installing NSS, at the conection request, select Virtual USB device.
2 - After installing all 3 programs, establish a connection to your N70 on your PC with the supplied Nokia USB cable. Once a good connection is made DO NOT touch the cable again until the update is finished. Also make sure your phone is plugged into the mains. Breaking the connection during the flash will kill the phone i believe.
3 - Backup your phone using content copier icon on the Nokia PC suite. I also sync'd my details while i was at it.
I have software version 5.0638.3.0.1 dated 18-09-06. To find out what version you have, key in *#0000# into your phone.
4 - After your phone is connected to your pc, start NSS. Click on the discovery icon in the top right hand corner. Click it to let NSS detect your phone info. Click on the phone info tab (which is the second icon from left). Key in the product code required and check the enable checkbox. The product code 0543027 will change the firmware to the N70 music edition but will not support Chinesse langusge use. I don't know what to do if you need that though.
Now click write and this will change the phone product code. Nokia will now think you have a music edition N70 and make the next bit possible. I believe there are other codes but i have only used the one given.
Clicking the read button then verify's the phones product code. This though did not work for me.
5 - Now you simply open Nokia software updater program and let it install the new firmware. DO NOT touch the usb cable during this part. When it was nearly finished though,i had a scare. It was not finished but told me to to replace the battery. It would not update the phone until i did. ONLY when it told me to replace the battery did I remove the usb cable and the phone was dead.It would not start up. I then removed the battery for about 10 seconds and when i replaced it the phone restarted again. I then reconnected it to my PC and shortly afterwards it finished the update.
6 - I then used the restore key in the content copier section of Nokia PC suite and re sync'd. Afetr that my phone was back to normal.
My phone now has the features Nokia wanted it to have.

Good luck but dont blame me if it goes wrong. It worked for me.

Rich
