Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

I sent back our XDA orbits because they wanted to charge us for the SatNav SW, I already have a Mini S which I love and without the SatNav SW thrown in there just wasn't enough extra to keep them.

Our contracts are up in March (the Orbits were on early upgrade), so what should I look out for in the XDA range. What I'd like is a VGA screen in a MiniS or Orbit style enclosure, I have SatNav in the car anyway so that's not a priority.

Our XDA MiniS's Synch our price lists, spreadsheets, Outlook contacts as well my Podcasts so I'm really hoping to stick with this style of phone.

Anything imminent?

Thanks,

Mark.

I have the Orbit with the Sat Nav - works perfect. Why were you charged for the Sat Nav?

Anyway, HTC are bringing out a new PDA phone similar to the Mini S but with an upgraded spec, in black and about 17mm thick (similar depth to the Orbit).

We weren't charged for the SatNav Software, they just didn't include it. On the 02 Website it had "Free SatNav Software worth £99", but we are with 02 Direct contract rather than purchasing via the website. I assumed that the software was included and it wasn't. I returned them within the 14 day period and am now looking for an alternative upgrade phone. I did tell them why, and that if they included the software I'd keep them and extend my contract for the further 12 months but they wouldn't agree. I have to say we have a very competitive rate from them that may be something to do with their decision not to add the software afterwards.

As I said before I have SatNav in the car so I wasn't worried about that feature, it was just that the Orbit without it added nothing worth upgrading my phone for.

I'm more interested in being able to watch the odd TV show I load onto it, and a bit of Music and the ability to read the screen on webpages would be nice too (hence VGA request).

A MiniS/Orbit with VGA and a decent Camera would be perfect for me. The screen is the thing I'm hoping for most.

Looks like a likely candidate!

I think I'll go for this since I'm overdue a replacement. I Called O2 today but they aren't released until Week Commencing 23rd April. I think I can wait that long.

Not sure what it adds over the MiniS, but it's a faster CPU. Still Windows Mobile 5 though, isn't Windows Mobile v6 imminent?

Thanks,

Mark.

Re: Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

I think HTC have already started selling devices loaded with WM6, o2 wont upgrade the OS later down the line either and neither will HTC by the looks of things, the only way to get it is to source and load it on yourself did you ask if it was WM5 or 6 ?

Re: Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

id recomend windows mobile 6.
smoother, better looking, quicker, better support.

im running a "beta" version on my qtek 9000 aka xda exec, plus its overclocked from 520mhz to 624mhz so it flies like no other exex iv used before. Watching full screen good quality movies is no problem, even streaming them from my laptop.

Re: Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

oh and the internet explorer on mobile 6 is worth the wait alone.
you know how annoying it was before never fitting the screen, but seemed quick, and how you tried opera etc that was great as it rendered the page to fit screen making it the same layout as normal, but it was slow!
well the new explorer fits to page, quicker and better than opera and has hi res mode, the browser is now great! all i wish it had now is tabs

Daddy k

Not hyjacking thread but what are you using to stream?

I used media encoder before is there a simpler solution out there?

Have not thought about the o/c on mine.

Re: Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

simply i dont know, im using resco file explorer to browse files on network via wifi, then click the movie etc and plays on appropriate programme, tcmp/windows media.

on wm6 there is an icon called ""streaming" which allows you to put an address into stream.

what is it your looking to stream?

Re: Passing on the Orbit, what's next in the XDA evolution?

im using xcpu scaler to overclock mine, its set on perm 624mhz. i also done performance tests using sk tools, in normal mode and overclocked and it defo improves it! sk tools also gives a table of standard speeds etc for most pda,s and lists the actual speed of yours in the table, so you can really se the improvement
