walky talkie/2-way radio

I am not really sure where to put this topic so I will just stick it in here. Recently my father developed a bedroom downstairs which he intends to sleep in from now on. I will continue to sleep upstairs. He is disabled in a wheelchair & he wanted me to enquire about some type of 2-way radio or something. He needs something that can be set in his room downstairs but I will also need one in my bedroom upstairs. He would like something that just sits on a charger beside the bed and he can lift it & speak to me upstairs & then we can both set them back on a charger after we have finished our conversation. It would be prefferable if the device had very good battery strength! Please give me some good suggestions! Thanks!

Just type "walkie-talkies" into your search engine. There are more than you can shake a stick at.
I think all the major stores, Comet,Dixons, Argos etc stock them.

PMR and 446 also works in search engines.

Some twin digital cordless phones can do a similar function.

Try Maplins too.

Mine is a Oregon Scientific TP-380 and came with twin chargers. Others probably do as well though. Many reckon Motorolas are the best make.

What is the absolute best i could buy for under £150? I dont really know anything about them so maybe that is an unrealiztic price range? As long as we can communicate with eachother throughout the house & they are rechargeable!

Re: walky talkie/2-way radio

I wouldn't want to spend anywhere near that.
Cheaper the better, IMO.
As you say, as long as it has 2 chargers (and that's not really necessary) anything will do.
The range isn't a problem, so forget that.
Anyone you see will do what you want, but I wouldn't want one where you have to change the batteries every week (the ultra cheap ones).

Re: walky talkie/2-way radio

I think with mine you get something like a 3km range and the batteries last about 20 hours or something. I paid less than £40. Motorola tends to be a favourite with people.

Re: walky talkie/2-way radio

best by far are kenwood Tk3201. What the security firms use and Autocom recommend for bikes etc. Bit pricey but 2nd hand ones are avail on ebay.

Don't buy TK3207...they are cheap Chinese copies....not good either.

Re: walky talkie/2-way radio

Hi JKJ

Sounds like pretty expensive options.

I have a sister with disability and have had to explore options to allow her independance (very limited though it is) but with the ability to call for help if needed.

A cheap option we found was a remote doorbell - you know the wireless ones. She has the bell bit with her - we stick in on her walking stick with sticky back velcro so it can easily be taken off and put back on. The chime bit just plugs into a socket where ever in the house you are - another room, asleep in bed etc. When she needs me its `ding dong - just wish she'd use it before she gets into difficulty - but its always on her walking stick.
This of course doesn't allow talk but have you considered a cordless phone with the fascility to talk from one handset to the other. This also gives the disabled person access the the phone and outside world.

(Sorry administrator if this is outside the forums remit but those caring for the severely disabled need all the help they can get )

My best regards

LizzyF

Re: walky talkie/2-way radio

Forget expensive walkie talkies

As someone mentioned on an early reply, nearly all digital cordless phones have this functionality built in. usually the second phone doesn't even need to be plugged into a BT socket as it gets its signal from the base station of the first phone.

i paid about £35 for a pair of Philips cordless DECT phones with built in answerphone as well about 2 yrs ago and they have been faultless.

uridiums right the cordless digital phones have this facility are are cheap as chips these days !! Simply register the handsets to the base unit and away you go , most are is it DECT ?? digital whatever and sound reception crystal clear. Look in the Argos catalogue theres loads or shop on the net for even cheaper buys !!
