Don't know what phone to get ?

Hi peeps, since my 1st phone I've always had the basic high end phone that was out at the time, so now that have canceled my contract with o2 and I'm stuck in limbo.
I've basically come round to the idea that in the end no matter what the phone includes after the 1st month of playing about its a phone.
Now I'm looking at getting a phone that is totally different to my last phone (which was a k750i).
Was looking at the k800i but it just seems to be a slightly upgraded k750i (just has a better camera and is 3g)
Been looking at smartphones.
A few have took my eye.
Nokia n73
Nokia n80
Sony Ericsson m600i
Now i don't have a clue about what a smartphone can do, i know you can use Tom Tom but at the moment i don't drive, a nice feature to have but not a necessity.
So what else can i do with smartphone ?

If a smartphone is not for me
I'm looking at the :-
Samsung D900
Sony Ericsson k800i
Now my problem is I used to have a Samsung D500 and what peed me off was the inability of putting a mp3 as your message tone or alarm.
Small thing but peed me off.
So looking at the D900 all i can see yet again is same interface but a better screen smaller and better camera, not a big big change.
I've already said my problem with the k800i.

So peeps can you help me choose which kind of phone and what phone next.
cheers

Re: Don't know what phone to get ?

I have a D900 and love it. The menus are super easy to navigate and look cool too, it has a nice clear screen, excellent voice clarity, great to use for text messages, camera takes nice pics and videos, build quality is superb and it just generally feels nice in your hand. Also, considering how thin the phone is the battery life is pretty good. The mp3 is pretty good too although I dont like the headphones... I have a proper mp3 player anyway so it's no biggie.

My only issue is the same as yours in that you cant set your own sms tones but it's not that big a deal since it spends most of it's time on silent anyway.

It may be limited compared to some of the newer Nokias in terms of features but then I prefer form over function for my phones as I only really use them for calls, texts and the odd picture. I dont see the point in having an all singinig all dancing phone if I'm not going to use it.

I had a D600 before it and admittedly it's not that different, but then I loved my D600 so I'm more than happy with the D900.

Had a K750i before the D600 and my girlfriend has a W810i and I must say I like Samsungs a lot more. The build quality alone sets them apart... functionality and general use would still come down to personal preference however as they're not too different in that respect.

I have just got the se w850i and you can browse the phone and leave the mp3 player on. You can also set mp3s as text tone. Hope this helps, I have had samsung phones for last few years and was tempted to change D500 for D900 but saw w850i and decided to change, I am pleased I did as it is a much easier with better options phone. I wouldnt hessitate in recommending the w850i.

Re: Don't know what phone to get ?

If you're stuck beyween the Nokias...

I had a N80 for about 3 months and wouldn't recommend it to anyone - too many software bugs.

Swapped it for a N73 and can see me keeping this phone for a good while. Menu system can seam a little sluggish at times, but then it is doing everything I would want from a PDA (diary, e-mail, sat nav, games, mp3, etc.). Good camera, not too bad sound (mini stereo speakers are surprisingly good at low volumes), nice screen. Only thing I would change would be joystick (but it's getting better with age) and slightly larger keypad.

Can't comment on others as haven't used

Re: Don't know what phone to get ?

Hi,

Dont get any of the Nokia N series, they still have many problems and is the most returned phones at shops.

K800 is excellent if you need a good camera, better then the D900.

I should be getting a M600i tommorow thanks to a forum member on here lol so i can let you know how it is.

I'm sure it's nice, but I need a business phone, push email, qwerty, etc.

Already have a nav system, not interested in cameras, music, etc, completely fed up with W Mobile 5 phones (sometimes just sits there and completely ignores important incoming calls, pretending nothing's happening)

Have been playing with it today and so far so good. It was a bit slow to start with but after I did the software update it was excellent. For that reason it is much better to get an unbranded one as you get more updates. Keyboard is a bit fiddlely but once you get used to it, its easy to use. There isnt a huge amount of software out for it yet but its still quite new and it uses the same software as the p990 so there will be more coming out soon.

Theres only 2 downsides with this phone, 1 the camera (dont really use much) but more importantly is no WIFI. But for a smartphone in this size you cant have everything lol.

Re: Don't know what phone to get ?

Thanks Nitesh,
Sounds good to me, I've had camera phones for a few years, took a picture of the dog and that's it, have WIFI on the current phone but just use it to log in and retrieve loads of emails, going for push email this time so not a problem.

Re: Don't know what phone to get ?

The N73 is great BUT I've heard a fair few comments on it's screen. It's easy to break because it's so big then touching the plastic cover on it is easy.
N80: Stay clear of that one, the battery lasts about a day and it's buggy plus the N95 is out soon and is far better and thinner.
M600I, great phone for emails and texting, plus it has a 3d graphics engine for games. It has no camera though but it does have a fully featured MP3 player and the memory is upgradable, the software is also buggy but because it's a Sony Ericsson then you can upgrade the software for free when a new software release comes out.
If you like the M600I then also look at the W950I? These two phones also have touchscreens.
A smart phone allows you to add software to increase functionality and they sink with your PC easily, think of them as mini computers. They also have better games available.

If you want a camera phone then get the K800I, it's the best one at the moment. It's also just as easy to use as the K750I, it's faster and has 3G for your mobile browsing and video calling. The MP3 player is the same as the one on the W800I but without the Megabase feature. The K800I also has fantastic build quality, it's like a brick.
The new Samsungs are tasty though and are very thin and have 3G, just make sure it has expandable memory and your away.

I hope this helps, you really need to think what you want in a phone, able to instal software, camera, MP3 player etc.
