Moto A100 backup problem

Hi all, after braking the screen on my a100 over the weekend i need to connect it to my pc to retrive info off it (please, nobody suggest i should have thought of all this before i broke the screen ) so no probs, installed the software off the cd, connected via usb as instructed. My pc makes the 'der-dink' connection noise, yet when trying to access phone off the control bar it repeatedly says 'please connect device'.

Am i missing something? My pc just wont recognise the connection
