Sort of problem with orange

Ok it's not that big a problem but its still confusing.
Basically i got a new fone from orange registered it etc. then realised it wasn't for me so foned them up to cancel the contract and return fone this was about a month ago.I've just got a statement from them saying that my account balance is £-14.50 and that it will be deducted from my next bill. Here's where the problem is...if the contract is cancelled and i no longer have the fone how are they expecting to deduct money from a bill that should never get made cos the contract is cancelled??
I've already tried phoning them but cos i dont have the fone ro any of the details other than account number the stupid ppl on the other end don't seem to understand that its cancelled!!
Any ideas would be a great help.
