I am a little confused regarding the issue of texts that are sent to you out of the blue, that come from companys offering you stuff.

I you do not send the STOP message to them do they insinuate that this means you want them to carry on sending texts to you, whilst charging you for the privilege?

With some companies, I believe that's the way they operate. If you want to check what SMS services you're signed up to, whether you want to be or not, ring 08451309911, and you can cancel any subscriptions there and then for free. Also have a look at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Personally i wouldnt spend my money sending a txt to stop/cancel something that i didnt ask to receive in the first place. If its something you have signed up for in the past and no longer want, fair enough, send a stop message. But if it is TOTALLY unsolicited then replying may actually make it worse


TPS as mentioned above is the best way to get rid of unwanted calls/texts

I registered my home phone and mobiles a long time ago and these days i never get any unwanted spam calls/txts

I checked out that TPS link, and this is what it says:

The Telephone Preference Service can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of live marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. This is because under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2004 it is unlawful to send an unsolicited sales and marketing text message. Telemarketing companies who send SMS messages need your prior permission. There is no obligation therefore for companies sending SMS messages to people who have agreed to receive them, to screen against the TPS file.

So they can't do anything about text messages, but it does say it is unlawful for it to happen. Next text I get I will call 999 on them then LOL.
