Question Free Phone & Line Rental - Were's The Catch

I've been looking for a new phone and have found a number of sites offering a free phone & line rental (by cashback). You get inclusive cross network minutes & texts. So if I don't go over the inclusive minutes the phone and all the calls/texts I make are effectively free.

Can this really be true, does anybody have any experience of these offers, is there I catch. I've looked through the site but not come across anything ?

You can view one of the sites with this link :

Hi DOLBYDTS,

I have taken up several of these offers and as long as you don't go over the inclusive minutes you will get free line rental (by cashback).
However you must be careful which company you choose because some are better than others in dealing with the cashback claims.

I have used CPW and have always got my cashback claims with no problem. But you have to stick rigidly to the terms and conditions for the cashback claims whichever company you use - apparently some companies are notoriously difficult to claim from and make you jump through so many hoops before you get your cashback. I have never heard of dial2save so cannot comment on their reputation.

It is essential in any deal of this kind to make a note of the dates when you have to send in the claims either in your diary or the phone itself (preferably both). You must also be careful to send in the correct airtime bill or bills requested (some accept copies of the bills and others want the originals). You will only have a certain time frame to send in each claim which varies according to the company concerned. Failure to pay attention to these details can result in you losing the claim and some companies even then refuse to honour any further claims which may need to be made.

Both The Link and CPW have a good reputation for cashback schemes but remember that the onus is on you to make the claims in accordance with the rules specified.

Obey the rules, use a reputable company and these deals are excellent.

Yeah these cash back deals are by redemption so you have to send (normally) your 4th,8th and 12th bill in to them and then you get a cheque each time you send a bill in and they total up to cover the cost of the line rental.
A pain because you have to pay out the line rental initally but nice when you get the cheque!!!

Alternatly go for one where you get a free gift, ie XBOX 360, LCD TV. Then you only have to wait about a month to get the gift.

I just bought a deal from e2save part of CPW.

An 18 mth contract at £30 per mth on Orange. With 13 mths free line rental.

A cheque for £141 is sent to me automatically after two months, then I claim using vouchers at 4 mths, 8 mths and 12 mths and are sent cheques for £83 each time.

Tariff gives me 200mins X network anytime and 575 free texts.

But the big plus for me is my broadband is now free.

So before I was £17.99 per month x 18 mths = £324, and that got me:

Broadband and free evening and weekend calls with the voip phone.

Now I am paying a total of £150 over 18 mths = £8.33 a mth, and that gets me:

Broadband and free evening and weekend calls with the voip phone.
A new mobile and bluetooth headset with
200mins X network anytime and 575 free txts.

However I'm gonna give the phone to my 10 yr old daughter who uses £10 a mth
on bloody texts on her PAYG, so that saves me £180 over 18 mths.

So everything works out FREE!!

Like people have said it's just about sticking to all the conditions of the cashback offer.

I'll set reminders in Outlook to ensure I don't forget!!!

Hi pablo99,

Your E2Save deal with free Broadband would be a good deal for me.

I was under the impression that you could only get the free Broadband if you actually bought the phone from Orange themselves or from an Orange shop - but it seems that your deal has overcome this.

Could you please give details of which phone you got and details of the tariff and if possible where to find it on the website?

Regards

These deals must change all the time.

Just check the website www.e2save.co.uk

I got a Motorola L6 and bluetooth headset for free.

Tariff was 18 mth Canary.

I called them on Wed and the phone arrived Friday. I've called Orange already and that's my broadband now free. The free broadband conditions are only that it is an 18 mth contract and £30 or more. Doesn't matter where you get the phone, your contract is still with Orange.

Just looking forward now to my cashback. MUST REMEMBER!!

Pablo

Hi pablo99,

I was lucky enough to get the same deal as you from e2save after a bit of bartering.

Did you ring Orange before the phone was connected and delivered or after you received it and was there any special department to contact?

And did you ring them from your new number?

Thanks for the information.

Dear all

Here from CPW is another deal that seems to be too good to be true – free Samsung e900, 400 anytime minutes per month, 12 month contract = £17.50 per month after cashback (ie half normal price of £35 per month).

How does the cashback work = why do they require you to send your bill, I mean they obviously know who their customers are (who are paying direct debits) so why do they need the bill?

Who pays for the cashback - is it CPW or O2?

Thanx

The retailer pays the cash back, which in this case is the Carphone Warehouse.

They need to see your bill, to make sure that you have kept up with your payments to the network. If you haven't done, the retailer doesn't get their full commission, so they won't pay you cash back.

Don't forget, DialToSave Mobile Phones have an up to date list of the cheapest cash back deals for mobile phones, along with a price comparison search engine for all other deals.

OK thanx but going back to the original poster, how can they do a free phone and refund by cashback your entire line rental like this
I mean it doesn't add up - how are they making any profit? Or for that matter how are they even covering their costs since they are giving everything away for free?

Two reasons, both of which are important.

First of all, the networks want new customers, and are prepared to make a loss on some new customers in their first year, just to make a profit by keeping them after that first year.

Secondly, a lot of people simply forget to claim the cash back.

OK but there is no guarantee that they will keep those customers cos after 12 months they will be free to look for the best deal again.

Also it is strange that the networks are so keen to get new customers and yet i have seen a few stories on this forum about networks failing to hold on to their present customers. I am leaving Orange after about four years and I am surprised they didn't make more effort to keep me.

Anyway I haven't looked at the market for a while so is this free line rental by cashback a new thing or has it been here for ages? I presume that the networks could only afford a small % of customers to pay no money.

These deals with 12 months free have been around for more than a year, but they only got so competitive with much better phones since January of this year.

They make their profits through all the "extras" people add to their standard line rental as well as call charges that fall outside their standard tariff.

Re: Free Phone & Line Rental - Were's The Catch

Just to update this thread.

My cash back has came through OK. Two claimed, two to go. Indeed they have paid me more than I have paid them at the moment.

My bills have all been only £30. I've never made any more calls than the free allowance and I cancelled all the GPRS access and other monthly options.

Three others at work with me have took out the same deal.

Well worth looking into.
