Mobile upgrade question

Hyperthetical situation:
If someone is due an upgrade on contract, is it poosible to take the upgrade, but decide to keep using the old phone, and someone else (family member) using the upgrade phone? Or on upgrade, is the new phone registered to a specific person?

Just something i was wondering...

you should be able to let another family member use the phone but it will be registered to you thru the imei number. i would imagine the other person would need to be on the same network as you as the phone will be locked.

Thats what I thought.
Next question: If the upgraded phone was later unlocked to any network, how would that affect this situation?

the phone is registered wid the imei so if you report it stolen they can block the phone and for insurance if you get it. i dont think it would matter if you got it unlocked to any network. it will be still registered to you though.

It will be registered to you but the phone is yours to do with what you please. Sell it, give it away, smash it to pieces, what ever!

it is very very common for someone to get an upgrade, keep their old phone and sell the new phone on ebay

nothing wrong with it, you will not get in trouble and nothing to worry about. Hope your family member appreciates their snazzy phone

Thanks for the reassurence guys

I was looking on ebay and assumed thats where all the phones that are for sale came from, ie unwanted upgrades, so i thought I may do the same.
I was only initially put of from doing so by the recollection of paper work that i had to do on the last upgrade (with O2), but now i'm gonna go in and get it sorted
