Vodafone v1240 - Alternative to N80??

This is a candy bar windows mobile 5 phone with wi-fi just weighing 106g and it's free on any Vodafone tariff costing £25 and above. For me it looks the almost perfect phone, a genuine alternative to the N80. Anyone here have one or hoping to get one?

Thats a well qualified statement - is because you like MACS or Linux or that you wear sandals and live in a box?

If your gonna slag off something at least back it up

Looking at its specs it no way close to being an alternative to the N80. Well not a like for like similar specs alternative anyway. Only 1.3 pixel camera, no 3G

doesnt come close to the polished feeling of a regular phone
ugly gui

had several SPVs and they are just not good as a phone, windows should stick with PDAs and not mix phone and PDA as it's just not "right" in my eyes... they don't have enough experience...

I agree it's slighly lower spec'd than the N80, the camera is disappointing but I'm not too keen on 3G so i can forgive that shortcoming. However I don't think there's any phone the same size out there that can match it for features, HTC have a good track record and have been making these phones for major networks for years, so I guess reliability should be good. I was originally hoping for an N80 upgrade but that's going to be too costly and this phone just looks about right to me (except for the camera). Application availability is as good if not better than symbian.

The purpose of this thread is to get opinions from anyone who's got, or decided to get the phone, unfortunately it seems no one.

The 3G version is the unreleased Orange SPV C700 aka HTC Mteor, details here.

I had the SPV C600 (work phone) for a short while and it didn't feel any less of a phone than the Nokia symbians I've always used (currently have the 7610).

Which ones have you had, and just out of interest if they didn't look right to you why go through several?

HarryBarton,

I wasn't offended at all, in fact I was going to joke that you were a closet windows lover.

Anyway, the reason I asked which one you had is bcos I'm seriously considering this phone and I'm interested in negative comments, I didn't use the C600 long enough to find faults, but that's not to say it doesn't have any.

I wasnt offended either mate - I have had the SPV/E200/C500/C600 SPVm2000 and the M500 and now I have a Qtek 9100/iMate JAMin.

I happen to work in the mobile data security arena so I get to play with lots of new kit.
Currently waiting for the HP6915/Motorola Q/HTC Heremes and the FS Loox T series to arrive for me to do some testing upon.

I agree the early phones were pretty clunky but at the time was the only phone with IE for mobile and that in itself for news viewing was excellent.

I love the JAM/small pda/phone type devices now and would not consider anything else personally for the funtionality etc and now with direct push its outstanding, pee's all over a blackberry (having used both now) as I can do work things like write notes in word/fiddle basically with presentations and modify my monthly budget on excel mobile.

Cool!

just didnt want to clog the thread, but I had

the old original SPV that came out on orange

...that was ok but it felt like a pda with the function to dial phone numbers and that was it...things like your inbox for text messages didn't show who had sent them, just the phone number of the person

it would randomly lost entries in my contacts so i had to keep restoring them from my pc....memory is ok if you keep on top of it and remember to close things and flush the memory when it's low - but most users will just say its rubbish and not look into it.

like i say, lacking polish

also had the c500 which was pretty good but the construction was lacking, felt a bit tacky and the windows os still doesn't feel well thought out

to change silly little settings it seems you have to search through loads of unnecessary menus .. nothing is organised the way it should be into obvious menus.. it's all hidden away in deep sub menus

anyway, i got my N80 about an hour ago.... holy ****, newest firmware is on it - it's well nice and quick, too

edit - so as long as you don't mind some quirks and annoyances while you get used to it, probably be fine... just got annoyed and went to a more traditional phone OS
