Anyone heard of the O2 "Q3" Tariff?

Few days ago I posted on here detailing my problems in receiving WAP push messages on my O2 xda Mini S handset. I got in touch with O2 yesterday and they are saying that wap push is not enabled on my tariff (funny, as I have had this tariff for about 3 years and the feature has worked on all my other handsets). They are suggesting I need to be transferred to a "Q3" tariff which will apparently allow me to receive WAP push messages. It does cost £5 per month more however(!) but they say they will knock off this additional cost. I would have thought my problem was more to do with the handset itself (running Windows Mobile 5 maybe WAP push is considered a security issue?)
Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks

Hi there...

The Q3 tariff is no different from a Q1. the 1 and 3 denote how long the rollover minutes go in months... on a Q3 they roll over for 3 months on a Q1 they roll over for one month, and they are also talking out of their backsides because you can't be put onto a Q3 any more as the Q1's were brought in so that O2 offer the same as any other network. In exactly the same way as you can't be put onto a BTCellnet tariff if you did swap to the O2 one and decide you didn't like it.

What they are suggesting is that you need to upgrade to a more modern tariff that supports GPRS. Without knowing your tariff I can't specify any further, but if your tariff is still a BTCellnet AllTime tariff as I suspect it may be OR a VERY early O2 tariff that has been discontinued (O2 30 for example (unlikely if you have an XDA)) then your tariff doesn't actually support GPRS at the server-side.

As for the inherent dangers of WAP push messages... you just need to be canny as for what you accept. If it isn't from your mobile operator... don't accept it unless it's something you've asked for (like a ringtone etc)

Hi Dave, if you do work in O2 CS, do you know when the 'free' GPRS access is ending for pay monthly customers.
Thanks.

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. Now I am confused! I am on a BT Genie tariff and have been for around 3 years - 500 off peak mins, 500 texts plus WAP allowance for £20 per month (hence why I haven't changed tariffs despite O2 extolling the virtues of their £30 a month tariff!
All of my previous phones (including Motorola, Samsung D500) have been on this tariff and have accepted WAP push messages straight away. Thats why I thought it may be handset specific (I'm sure I read somewhere that because it is running Windows Mobile 5 operating system push messages are not enabled because of security issues.)
Anyway, since posting, O2 have apparantly switched me to Q3 which they say will become active from my next billing date.... Do you think this will be successful? I asked whether I could switch back to my o2 Genie tariff if this switch was unsuccesful and they said no problem. If they try to be funny I will just switch to Orange! Their loss! Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

It could be cos it's a windoze phone... to be honest I've always been dubious about the whole Windows for mobiles stuff... and the security issues thing would make sense... Since you are on a post-O2-takeover tariff you should be GPRS enabled, so in your case it is likely phone-related... which removes the whole point of it being a multimedia-enabled PDA phone... but that's microsoft for ya...

Andy, the GPRS usage still has an allowance level if you are on a current O2 tariff... I'll probably get to know like, the day before...

Thanks for that Dave. Well, will see what happens once my next billing date comes (24th May). Seems pretty lame if the Great MS cannot find a way around this! Cheers anyway.
