I would really like a new phone which allows you to assign mp3 tones/samples to message alerts.

Different sound alerts for messages from different contacts would be even better.

Are there any good phones to recommend?

yep the N70 allows you to do all that , you can have caller groups to assign a group of people to particular ring tone or mp3 or you can indiviudally assign people to ring tones or mp3s

My SPV C600 can use MP3 for the alert tone, haven't played with different tones for specific callers SMS, but it can certainly do it for incoming calls.
