using foreign mobiles in uk

hiya ive just joined this forum. have seen loads of phones on ebay which have loads of features etc but are from far east, usa etc - how can i ensure that these will work with an o2 sim in the UK?
sorry if this is a basic question

For the UK/Europe, as long as they work on GSM frequencies (900 & 1800), you'll be fine.

A lot of US phones aren't GSM though (CDMA) and similar with Japan and the far east, although they do have their fair share of GSM phones.

Can you quote some makes/models? I was under the impression most of the Japanese high spec phones wouldn't work in the UK.
