After recomendations for quad band mobiles to use in North America

tri band is enough, the only place that uses the 850 band is some parts of texas..

It's more than just Texas that uses 850Mhz. Although most metropolitan areas use mostly 1900Mhz, a lot of rural areas still use 850Mhz. Tri-band is fine if you intend to visit New York, but don't expect to get good reception if you're in hicksville.

The obvious quad-band choice would be the Motorola V3 RAZR. It's got its short-comings, but it's cheap, it's quad-band and it's got great reception. Quad-band phones are still pretty rare and most of them are made by Motorola.

If you can wait a month or two then the Nokia N80 looks amazing and it'll work practically anywhere in the world, including Japan, Korea and the whole of the US.

I'm pretty sure that if you take your SIM card with you to America, there are lots of places that do short-term phone hire.

I've just taken a new contract with O2 with a Samsung D600. The phone they have supplied is quad band. I got the phone from The Link online with a 200 x net tariff with 1/2 price line rental for 9 months

Just got a D600 from Voda and it's also quadband (though I turn off quadband as it's supposed to improve battery life!).

Overall very pleased with the phone. Only annoying thing is that the only ringtones are all polyphonic stuff and I find the simple ring sounds are much more audible in a busy environment/outdoors. Am fiddling with transferring mp3 files of simple rings to find one that's nice and loud!

Mine was a free upgrade but I know Voda is doing 6 months 1/2 price on a x200 tariff, with 250 texts or photo/video/data equivalent included so £18pm for 1st 6 months. I think it's an 18 month contract. the data equivalent is nice as I use my phone a lot for email and wap browsing (the email client in the D600 is brilliant - let's you delete stuff from server so you can manage loads of rubbish emails when away and not have to see them all again when you're back in office).
