Yeah I think there's a few EVDO (CDMA-style 3G) models available in the US but they would only work in the US.

The nearest thing I can think of is the Nokia E61. It's got quad-band GSM and UMTS (GSM-style 3G, suitable for Japan), looks like a Blackberry and comes with Blackberry Connect support. It isn't due out for a month or two though.

I haven't seen any real Blackberries on the horizon with UMTS, but I'm sure that there's one coming.

Which BB did you have - I use a 7230 via BES to connect for work, and its amazing.

One of the reasons why the BB haven't gone edge/3g yet, is that they don't really need it - the majority of what they send/receive is plain text, and that is handled easily enough by the GPRS signal.

The E61 may be close, but I doubt it'll work anywhere near as seamlessly as the 7230 (or 7290) does, and it won't come close on battery life, and I doubt it'll do as well on signal, at least no Nokia I've owned has come close to the 7230 on basic reception.

I had a 7100v couldnt fault it, quick to email and I could send 100s and 100s of emails and it was all covered by a monthly 6mb data package.

I want a device that supports 3G so I can connect to Japanese networks, would be nice to only pay standard data tariff and email home/friends phones in japan.

E70 looks good, seamless shifting between GPRS/3G etc for email roaming.

I also think a nokia will never be as snappy to email with as a BB, but if I can send 100s of emails while abroad under a £15 data tariff, I'll be extremely happy.

I think the new SE P990 which is coming out has blackberry and 3G as well as wifi. Not sure when it is out though. Check out the XDA exec as well, I think it has everything
