mp3 ringtones and vodafone

my first sony s7ooi lasted 8 months so i recieved a new one from vodafone 2 wks ago. when i tried to set one of my mp3 files to ringtone i was told it was not possible. so i contacted vodafone this morning and was told this was not allowed as this was conflicting copyright laws BUT i could set a mp3 as ringtone if i downloaded the file from Vodafone Live. What about the mp3 i already have on my fone.....i was told to download them again..this time from vodafone live.
after a bit of argueing they then told me that if i took the fone to a vodafone or sony shop they would FLASH the fone. and this would then allow any mp3 to be set as a ringtone.

1st...Why could my old s700i use mp3 as ringtones--regardless from where i got them

2nd..why did the new fone not allow the mp3 that was saved from my old fone to be used

3rd..Why did vodafone not send me out a fone tat was allready ''Flashed''

in my opinion Vodafone are trying to cash in on ringtones by blocking their fones from playing mp3 tunes that did not come from them.
Still to get this sorted out but anyone has answers all help much appreciated. In the mean time dont get a vodafone handset unless you know that it sets mp3 to ringtone that comes from another sorce

Your assumption is pretty much correct - Vodafone would rather you bought their over-priced ringtones than make your own.

I believe that you can use mp3 ringtones even on a protected phone by wrapping your file in Vodafone's DRM.

I'm surprised that Vodafone are willing to flash your phone to remove the restriction, to be honest.

flashing

ther actual responce was that they would do this IF the store had the appopriate sofware availiable. but believe me this took all of 55mins on the fone with a lot of raised voices.
the bit that really pi***d me of was they tried to con me with copyright laws. it was only when i said that buying off another ringtone company would not infringe any law but the mp3 would still not work on my fone . so vodafone were forcing you to go to Live
