I am looking to upgrade/change mobiles in the next few months or so, does anyone know of some prospective ones to look out for in the near future??

if your not into that much music (4gb of space) then the full nokia 'n' range looks pretty impressive, I like the twist nokia n90 and the more camera friendly n70.

8800 is nice, but nowadays for me you have to have phones running on a symbian OS, the 8800 unfortunately runs on nokia's own OS which is version 4. thats the only drawback for me and for that reason only I wouldnt consider it.

No, Nokia will never use Microsoft the same as Sony Ericsson. Both of them have invested in Symbian (Nokia owns a large percentage) so you won't see MS on their phones.

Good thing as well, Symbian is more stable than MS.

I suppose if symbian specialise in OS for mobiles then they will be better, more stable then MS because its what they concerntrate on where as MS put there efforts into computers maybe??

Im not sure what OS either of the two that i like have.

Is it generally a year after new mobiles are launched in America that we get them over here??

Symbian was joint project between Nokia, Motorola and Psion (if anyone still rembers them!!) then SE came, the point was to take on Microsoft.

As for the US, they get phones later than Eupoe. But Japan are obviously technically ahead of us.

Microsoft has been used in mobiles for a couple of years now (Orange have supported them from the start), their new one windows mobile is due for release very soon. I think pdas will be using the same platform as well.

Symbian should hold their own though, with the backing of Nokia and SE I can't see Microsoft dominating the smartphone market easily.

I strongly disagree that Symbian is more stable, or indeed better in any significant way than MS Mobile. I have run MS Mobile on both smartphone and pda for sometime now and have never had a stability problem, nor do the forums support this view.

I don't have any pro or con towards either OS, other than my experience on the MS side and I believe that either will be satisfactory for smartphone use. Indeed, MS Mobile is gaining ground on Symbian at quite a rate if you take into account the two flavours, smartphone and Pocket PC phone. You shouldn't ignore the fact that Symbian and MS Mobile are just two of the possible OS'es for smartphone use, others are Linux, J2ME, Brew, Openwave, Action Engine and other proprietary systens.

What you should look at is if the phone that you intend to buy will do what you want, rather than which OS it uses.

symbian is considerably better than windows mobile. the whole design of the OS is far more efficient and intelligent. thats why windows mobiles always need much more random access memory and cpu power to perform at the same level as a symbian phone.

the future of mobile OSs is not between microsoft and symbian, but between symbian and linux.

I disagree with you Ikki, I find Symbian more stable, faster and more intuitive than MS smartphone. But then again thats my personnal opinion and not that of the forum.

Yes you are right to point out that MS is getting its act togther with the new windows mobile but unless they can get some big brands behind them their going to find it hard competing aginst Nokia and SE. MS do have Motorola but they aren't really pushing the windows platform at the moment. Nokia and SE know how to make phones for the mass market which is what counts.

The s600i is just the bog standard sony ericsson operating system.

Nokia n70 has usb port, n90 also has usb port and the multimedia jobby n91 also has usb support.... there's also rumours of 2 more phones being added to the 'n' series but I cant find any details on these.

WM2005 brings a unified mobile MS operating system, all pocket PC's and an increasing number of smartphones will use it. It is rapidly gaining critical mass.

On another tack, I can thoroughly recommend the SE 750i, small, tons of features including MS Outlook syncable calendar and a 2MP autofocus camera that actually works very well.
