Tomtom on Android

I've been using Tomtom on my SPV M700 for the last 3 years and it's been great. I've just bought an Android phone, LG GT540 Optimus, which I was pretty sure won't run Tomtom (please tell me if I'm wrong). What are the options with Google maps? I assume that I only pay for the data download for the maps, then my gps will show me where I am for free? But if I want to use Google as a normal satnav then I have to be connected by gprs? So, being on a skinflints payg, how expensive is it? I should add that I have a Mitac Mio which I'll probably use my Tomtom on, but I think I'll miss having tt and memory map on my phone for convenience.

You're right they don't make Tomtom for Android.

The amount of data you use on google maps will depend mostly on how far you drive, the further the more data it'll have to download. Best bet would be a payg plan that give's you unlimited data (for most plans that means 500 meg a month). Most of the networks do them and you may be able to change the plan you're on to one.

The other option would be Copilot. All the maps are installed with the program. My lads just used it to travel across Europe with no problems (and no data uses).
Its not a free programme, but you might find it somewhere ??

I had the same issue, i bought a htc hero and i installed copilot 8 live.

The only reason i could find a fault was the " navigate to contacts" which was missing. Apprt from that its 100% good.

Google missed a trick there, I dont know why UK maps cant be stored on the SD card like a normal Sat Nav...
3G is so patchy around the country.

You can, you can go here:

Brut Google Maps xda-developers

and get a modified version of Google Maps, that cache's map tiles to the SD card, and get full Navigation that way.
It tells you to install voice files, etc, and works really well.
No charges to worry about, just download the tiles prior to the trip over wi-fi, and away you go.

If you want a decent Nav programme, Sygic 10 is better than Co-Pilot, IMO, and the maps are very up to date, which was an issue I found with Copilot.

Surprisingly still works well regardless even if you re-route in a non-3G area

Was about to comment the same, 3G is near useless in my neck of the woods, infact have it disabled to save battery use, Google Maps has been solid as a rock for me.

Might look into the satnav that Scott mentions above though(Sygic 10), as now I'm going to be driving out to isolated pubs around Exmoor I'd really like a back-up.

BTW, Google Maps has just received an update which is supposed to feature some sort of memory/download(can't quite remember) so that when signal drops you don't lose your navigation. Haven't downloaded it yet myself as when somethings working perfectly I tend to be afraid of updating.
