Hello I'm after some advice on the internet on mobiles. I've for many years had bog standard phones with no interest in searching the web on them. This recently changed when work started up the new firewall and I became watched by big brother . So my question is which service provider gives the best deal on the internet? It all seems a bit confusing with the 500Mb, 1Gb limits. All I want to do is browse the web for news/listings and post on the forums I'm a member on. All the operators have an unlimited bolt on but then they have that little * by it which then points you to the fair useage policy. How much Data would I need? and is one operator really unlimted?

If all you'll be doing is browsing then you shouldn't get anywhere near those usage limits - I rarely got past 300MB/month with my iPhone and tended to use the data connection daily for things like facebook and the like. It's really only when you start downloading videos or loads of music (or streaming them) that you'll be in danger of busting those sorts of limits - forum browsing will generally be pretty low volume data as it's mostly just text.

In terms of value, most of the operators seem to offer some form of unlimited bolt on or allowance for about £5 (or equivalent), so really who is "best" will probably come down to who gives you the most consistent 3G signal where you are (assuming your handset is 3G anyway, which I would recommend if you want to do any amount of web browsing). Are you looking for PAYG or contract? What sort of minutes / text usage do you have?

Work out which network gives the best coverage in the areas you'll be using it. This is the most important factor to get right, IMO.

Cheers for the replies guys, I'm looking to get an HTC desire sim free or on contract, haven't decieded yet. But need unlimited text and very little talk time but think I will need an unlimited internet bolt on as this is going to be the primary use of the phone. Wont be downloading movies or songs (could download on home computer and then transfer across to phone saving data? ) so your 300Mb of data use is reassuring, but think I'd like the saftey net of the 1Gb/unlimited offers. Will now be off to the operators to see which gives the best coverage.

Time to get the calculator out and crunch those contract numbers
