"Unlimited" Mobile phone internet, free or not?

I am looking at mobile phone contracts and the offer of "unlimited data", i assume this means unlimited surfing AND downloading anywhere using the wifi or 3g (or equivalent) internet.

Someone correct me if im wrong please!

There will be a fair use policy somewhere in the terms and conditions. My one is 1gb. This will be reguarding the 3g though as they cant control your wifi and what access points you connect to, although sometimes some will offer you wifi minutes so you can connect to some access points at train stations and airports etc.

I read somewhere online that 500mb to 1gb is plenty for using facebook and browsing pages like news etc. I thought wifi was free to use though?

All im really worried is getting a contract with "unlimited data" and then finding myself with a huge bill at the end of the month because their sly little S.O.Bs.

Yes if your phone has wi-fi then all you would be doing is using your home ISP connection. It might sound obvious but make sure it is on wi-fi - it would be an expensive bill after the fact if you were actually on 3G or Edge!

Your home wifi is free to use with your mobile phone, but public wifi such as 'The Cloud' is subscription bassed unless access is included in your mobile tariff.
