lost orange phone, advise please

Hi my friend has just got a new Sony phone on an orange £35 a month contract and has lost it while he is working, he is pretty sure a client of his has took it as he left it on a desk.

Anyway the question is that he has not got any insurance with the phone so where does he stand, is he locked in to paying £35 a month to orange for the next two years, or will they send him a replacement? (he knows some people who have got orange phones that aren’t insured that have been sent replacements, but orange have said that if he has not got orange care they wont do it) Any experience advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

First off he needs to phone Orange and report the phone as stolen. They will cancel the SIM and send him another one. If he knows the IMEI number of the phone (should be on the box it came in) then they can lock the phone to stop it being used by anybody else - Orange or the phone shop that sold it may also know the IMEI number.

As for the contract - he will definately have to continue paying it for the duration of the remaining months on the contract and as the phone was not insured I would be very surprised if Orange did send him another phone. But he will only know for sure if he calls them and asks. IIRC the early Orange contracts included the first years insurance, so this may be why some people have been given a free replacement phone.

But assuming no replacement is given to him his best bet IMO is to buy a PAYG or SIM free phone and put the replacement SIM they send him in that.

Mark.
