Best phone for GPS

Hi I am about to up-grade my phone and looking for something with gps and mp3. Not fussed about anything and I don't really want to pay a fortune for loads of things that I won't use.

What would you recommend?

Re: Best phone for GPS

How much do you want to spend? And will this be your primary Sat Nav device, or an occasional use device?

If this will be your only or main Sat Nav device, screen size is a big deal or else it will be hard to use. Therefore I'd recommend looking at some of the Windows Mobile based handsets with GPS built in, as Sat Nav software options are plentiful and there is plenty of choice for large screen devices.

Otherwise, Nokia S60 devices have a few Sat Nav options, such as TomTom and Garmin XT (my personal fav). Smaller screens could be the limitation, but I had an N82 with Garmin XT that was fine for occasional use.

If budget isn't a problem, you could do a lot worse than the iPhone.

Budget is the killer though, so let us know that and recommendations will be much easier.

Re: Best phone for GPS

I am looking for it to be an occasional use sat nav. I wouldn't use it often enough to warrent buying a dedicated device.

One that I had in mind was the Nokia 5800. But there seems to be a few others that could warrent consideration.

If somebody was to tell me the iphone was much better I'd go for it but if the 5800 will do what I need it to do then I don't see the point in paying double for the iphone.

I'd rather avoid sony erricson, I have a 910i that crashes a week and can do with out the hastle. I have kind of stoped using my bluetooth with it because every other time I used it the phone would crash, and switch it's self off.

Re: Best phone for GPS

You could certainly do a lot, lot worse than the 5800. If that's the sort of money you wish to spend, it's a very good choice.

It goes without saying that the iPhone offers much more than the 5800, but you pay much more for it. The 5800 is a good phone if it does everything you need.

All comes down to budget really.

Re: Best phone for GPS

If you can afford it, the forthcoming HTC HD2 will probably be quite a good satnav phone. It has a huge screen, runs Windows Mobile (lots of satnav software options) and it also has a special "car kit" designed to mount the phone on the dashboard for easy viewing (while powering it from the cigarette lighter, I think).

Re: Best phone for GPS

The GPS on the Nokia 5800 is pretty good, however it doesn't have point to point voice directions out of the box, you need to pay extra for that, if you have a data contract then Goole Maps is an option on the 5800
