Technical benefits of different providers

I'm interested in knowing some more about the comparative merits of different service providers from a technical, rather than financial, perspective. For example, what are the differences in terms of geographical coverage these days? How do 3G internet connection speeds vary? What services or platforms are offered only by some providers? (For example, 3 has the whole Skype thing going - is that actually any use?) What other issues might I encounter, starting with a SIM-free phone? (I'm currently leaning towards an HTC Touch Pro 2, but I haven't made my mind up yet).

Unless you're in an area where the O2, Three, Orange or T-Mobile signal is stronger...

Things are fairly even these days, in terms of overall UK coverage, but it still varies by location. If you can find some friends and family on the various different network that's one way of working out what the signal will be like. The other is to obtain some PAYG SIM's and use your current phone if it's unlocked.

This is handy for checking coverage of different networks...

Direct Mobile Phones : Check coverage maps for Orange O2 Vodafone Three 3 T-Mobile mobile network coverage in your area.
