Not really sure, to be honest! I got a bit carried away in the moment of my success! I did remember to take the rep's name and number, just in case anything goes awry, but hopefully I can just take the PAC code to O2 and use it to get an iPhone. That's Plan A, anyway. Apparently, though, if I don't use the PAC code within 30 days, it expires (in which case I would miss my chance to cancel the contract...)

What you need to do if you want it on a new orange contract is transfer it to another network on payg first, and then back to orange.

Re: Orange contract question

I cancelled last night, told them I had the text (I hadn't) and he checked his system and said OK thank you your PAC is in the post! Didn't try and make me stay at all.

So hopefully within a week or so I can port my number to the new Orange contract I just took out with double my minute, double my data allowance and for £10 cheaper!

And I even received the text today .

I've just cancelled and taken out a new contract but the guy said it wont finish until sep 3rd and din't say anything about my PAC code he just put the phone down, so say they send my pac code out after 3rd september and i've already had the new contract for a month would i be able to port my old number after that amount of time has passed? How do you do it anyway? Someone said you have to port it to a PAYG then back to your contract, how does that work then?

I would ring them back and ask for a PAC code. Sounds like the guy has just put you down as giving 30 days notice to cancel. If thats the case, you wouldn't be able to port your no from an inactive account.
Get your PAC code, port it to a payg sim from t-mobile etc. When that has ported, get a pac code from t-mobile, and port to your new orange contract. Should take about a week all together, and not as much hassle as it sounds.

I have to say, that sounds like ******** to be honest. Remember its costing you for a full month of notice on your old contract, but with a pac code you could have the account closed by weekend. I think they are being very sneaky there. i suppose its a good job you're not too bothered really.

Re: Orange contract question

This is so frustrating for me as I have only just started with my Orange pay monthly plan! I'm currently paying £19.57 p/month with my Samsung i8910HD and included I have 800mins, unlimited texts and Magic Numbers... I mean, I don't even know what to do. For me, that's a great pay-monthly deal so is it worth me getting rid?! I like being on Orange and if I were to cancel a contract with them I'd want to jump straight back in (with the same number as well). I guess the main advantage here is being able to keep my handset? And possibly sell it? It retails at £430! I really could do with some guidance on the matter! Thanks in advance

Re: Orange contract question

That's me just canceled. No probs with getting a PAC code sent out, although they were trying to get me to stay with an offer of a cheaper tariff.

I got a HTC Hero from T-Mob store yesterday, which I'm over the moon with! Now to sell my N95 8GB

I think as long as you took out the contract before May 31st you're ok to cancel.

Call 150 from your Orange handset

Try again, the next person might just let you go through with it now. I think others on here have done this after being refused 1st time

Yeah, I got refused A LOT before I was finally successful (seven attempts, maybe?). I haven't had the text message. I tried blagging it and saying I've got it, too, but they know - you just need to find someone who doesn't really care. Although I still lied about it on the occasion I was successful!

@ rickinyorkshire - I had 12 months left on an 18 month contract, and I managed to cancel in the end

Next time I phone I'm not going to say I've had the message but I have been told it's coming out to me so they may as well allow me to cancel now.

Re: Orange contract question

As the BitterWallet advice indicated, it shouldn't matter whether you've had the text or not - the changes are still happening, you will still be told, and anyway, all Orange needs to do is confirm it over the phone for it to come under clause

16.1 c) - direct communication

in your contract.

Re: Orange contract question

I think only you can really answer those questions, Eddzzz. I haven't done the research to be able to tell you if there are better deals or not out there, but if you're happy with what you have, then stick with it. The only difference is if you really think it's worth selling your phone - what model is it, and what is the SECONDHAND retail value (it's not brand new, as you've used it).

The only reason I'm jumping ship is that I want an iPhone, and Orange doesn't support them at the moment.

If you decide to flog your phone, make sure you take the advice above for switching your number on to another network and back again (PAC code required twice) if you want to keep the number.

As for the pre/post 31st May thing, as far as I am aware (and I could be wrong, it's all quite hazy), it breaks down like this:
1. Some tariffs are changing a bit. Don't know which. This constitutes a breach of contract, allowing you to cancel.
2. All tariffs will be subject to an increase in charges for certain numbers, such as when calling your answerphone. This is therefore a breach of contract for everyone, and also allows you to cancel.

Re: Orange contract question

Well, i have just phoned 150. Spent 10 minutes on hold then i got a very weord lady. She started blathering about how i would most likely not be able to get a new contract because of the credit crunch, then said it was ridiculous that i wanted to cancel. I kept my mouth shut because i had a feeling she was going to hang up on me. Then when i said i still want to cancel and want a PAC code she put me on hold for a few minutes, came back and said the system was down so she couldn't do it today.

I think Orange are having quite a few cancel and are trying their best to keep customers. She did try and tempt me with reduced line rental but i want a new phone

So i'm playing the old waiting game now, she said the PAC issue should be fixed in the next couple of days.

Does anyone know if you can purchase a new contract without a PAC code but then give it them when i receive it?

Re: Orange contract question

@ Eddzz

im in a similar situation to you and i have the same phone. Im opting to sell it as i can get a cheaper deal with an iphone 3gs.

i pay £30 a month or slightly over depending usage on orange but is a 18 month contract.

im going for the o2 12 month sim only which is £19.58 a month and £100 cashback via quidco. im selling the samsung which is currently on ebay and will buy a 3gs 16gb (3% quidco via apple).

all in all im saving money and will end up with a top end phone. the browser and poor 3rd party support is what underwhelmed me with the samsung - the camera was sweeeeeet! but i value the user experience a bit more considering the bugginess of the s60 5th edition.

i browsed around 3 sites in the time it took the samsung to load just one.

thats my experience and thoughts.

Yup. I got a HTC Hero on T-Mob yesterday and asked the guy if I can still use my Orange PAC code once I'd canceled with them, to which he said there's no time limit on when you can change your number

I'm currently carrying two phones until I get the PAC as I don't see the point in giving people my new number... and neither phone will take the others SIM.

Thank you to Billy Goodgun and Simba for your useful insight I am still really unsure of just what to do at the moment... I too have always liked the iPhone and it's OS and agree completely that it surpasses the user experience of the i8910HD ... However, S60 5th ed is still in it's early days and I am confident it will recieve the support it warrants. Not sure how much I'd be able to flog the device for anyway! It seems like a hell of a lot of hastle. I'm just going to have to think this through...

I'm currently carrying two phones until I get the PAC as I don't see the point in giving people my new number... and neither phone will take the others SIM.
Where did you get your Hero from, online or from a shop?

It is £29.34 at mobilephonedirect.com but is £35 on the official T mobile site.

I ordered one online via T-Mob site on Monday but got an email yesterday saying they're out of stock so called my local T-Mob store and they had 4 left so I picked one up after work.

That's a good deal from mobilephonedirect.com, but I'd maybe call to check stock first. I think they're proving quite popular!

hehe i was in your shoes too for a fair bit my friend. i went into the apple store had a play and liked it. considering the jailbreak options too and free apps then its all good.

i agree with much more development the samsung can be awesome and still is in its own right, but with no idea of when and how long, thats anyones guess. it could be 6 months or even 10 months by which time it wont be long till my sim only term is up, then i could choose to either keep the iphone or get a samsung i8910 even if its been tweaked to hell. again this is all speculation....

The phone comes free too. I am always a bit concerned with these internet sites, you never know what's in the small print until you receive the documentation in the post.
