| Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives
I've just typed something very similar in another thread asking the same question... but...
HTC Magic.
It's every bit as 'pretty' as the iPhone.
The capacitive screen is as good as the iPhone.
The screen resolution is the same as the iPhone.
It's web browser is as good as the iPhones.
It's touch screen keyboard is as good.
It's lighter and smaller.
It's battery life is the same (as with all this type of handset).
It's quicker flicking through apps.
It can multi-task!
The iPhone wins on it's ecosystem, in that the App store is more developed. The Android marketplace is catching up though and many developers who develop for the App store have ported their software to the Marketplace. There are no restrictions to Android apps either, so innovation is not restricted.
iTunes and it's content also form an advantage for the iPhone in terms of an integrated system. Android can play more formats, but if you like iTunes you'll love the integrated approach of iPhone + iTunes.
The Android media player isn't as fancy looking as the iPhones. But the music playback sounds better and more 'open'. This is what counts. It does feature some things that the iPhone lacks, such as Search and YouTube integration into this Media software. If you're listening to a track and want to find the video for it, you can search YouTube or the web directly from it. Nice touch.
If you're a Googlemail user, the Android offers push-email and full OTA synchronisation with your Google account. It asks for your Google username and password and within a couple of minutes, your contacts, calendar etc are all ready to go. It also supports non-Googlemail accounts though.
The Android is also very integrated, probably moreso than the iPhone, in that all the apps, all it's features and it's entire functionality is consistent and integrated with every other aspect. The media player, internet and YouTube integration I mentioned before is a good example. The Google services integration is another.
My last few phones of note (the important ones to this discussion) have been the iPhone, iPhone 3G, Sony Ericsson X1, HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Magic.
The HTC Magic is the only phone that can go toe-to-toe with the iPhone in every area. It's also got the pretty, touchy-feely, new feeling UI that makes you feel you have something special. It's still a new OS and there is some improvement to be made though.
In fact, all of the big, new, exciting and revolutionary features announced last night are basic stuff to Android in general.
I love the iPhone. I'm also bitterly disappointed with the rubbish they rolled out last night. And having owned both iPhones, various Windows Mobile devices and now the Magic I hope my comments will be welcomed without the fanboy rubbish you often get.
