Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

Hi

I don't think there is any ?

There are better phones (whistles and bells wise)

There are worse phones.

I want mine for mainly personal media/internet use and I think it's the best.

For business use probably BB's are best.

You pay your money, you take your choice !

Yes i know what you mean

At current i own the iPhone 2g and absolutely 100% reccomend it.

I have waited for the 3gs to be released and it is no major upgrade really and doesnt look any differentot the 3g model which is a shame although it looks amazing how it is.

But it is quite expensive to be honest; £400+ for 16gb . I would get the 8gb but i want the latest phone as there is not point of paying £349.99 for an 'old' iPhone.

Just looking for alternatives really, just to see what comeptition the iPhone has.

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

Not sure what the difference is but I saw this Blackberry Storm 2 deals | Mobile phone price comparison. in the coming soon section, a Blackberry Storm 2, catchy name lol.

Apart from that for business users I personally don't think anything compares against the iphone imo.

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

If I didn't already have one, i'd just get a second hand 3G model and wait for the 3.0 update, it'll still be the muts nuts and your not tied into anything for next year when they get bored and bring out a 3G SS or something.

I'm left bitterly disappointed by it too and I don't even own an Iphone at the moment. This was going to be my first one but looking at the spec and price I think it is a complete waste of money.

I don't understand why Apple haven't created something new or changed it in some way to differentiate it from a 3g. Even a colour change or removing the tacky chrome round the edge just do something.

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

I've just typed something very similar in another thread asking the same question... but...

HTC Magic.

It's every bit as 'pretty' as the iPhone.
The capacitive screen is as good as the iPhone.
The screen resolution is the same as the iPhone.
It's web browser is as good as the iPhones.
It's touch screen keyboard is as good.
It's lighter and smaller.
It's battery life is the same (as with all this type of handset).
It's quicker flicking through apps.
It can multi-task!

The iPhone wins on it's ecosystem, in that the App store is more developed. The Android marketplace is catching up though and many developers who develop for the App store have ported their software to the Marketplace. There are no restrictions to Android apps either, so innovation is not restricted.
iTunes and it's content also form an advantage for the iPhone in terms of an integrated system. Android can play more formats, but if you like iTunes you'll love the integrated approach of iPhone + iTunes.

The Android media player isn't as fancy looking as the iPhones. But the music playback sounds better and more 'open'. This is what counts. It does feature some things that the iPhone lacks, such as Search and YouTube integration into this Media software. If you're listening to a track and want to find the video for it, you can search YouTube or the web directly from it. Nice touch.

If you're a Googlemail user, the Android offers push-email and full OTA synchronisation with your Google account. It asks for your Google username and password and within a couple of minutes, your contacts, calendar etc are all ready to go. It also supports non-Googlemail accounts though.

The Android is also very integrated, probably moreso than the iPhone, in that all the apps, all it's features and it's entire functionality is consistent and integrated with every other aspect. The media player, internet and YouTube integration I mentioned before is a good example. The Google services integration is another.

My last few phones of note (the important ones to this discussion) have been the iPhone, iPhone 3G, Sony Ericsson X1, HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Magic.

The HTC Magic is the only phone that can go toe-to-toe with the iPhone in every area. It's also got the pretty, touchy-feely, new feeling UI that makes you feel you have something special. It's still a new OS and there is some improvement to be made though.

In fact, all of the big, new, exciting and revolutionary features announced last night are basic stuff to Android in general.

I love the iPhone. I'm also bitterly disappointed with the rubbish they rolled out last night. And having owned both iPhones, various Windows Mobile devices and now the Magic I hope my comments will be welcomed without the fanboy rubbish you often get.

don't understand it myself,
colour option would have been great specially the Matt black look,
protectors for the port connector and ear phone plugs to protect from rain and moisture,
bezel removed and camera on the front,
also a better camera,
i can get a cheap phone for under 50quid with 3.2 mega pixel camera

it isnt much to ask but apple know that all the fan boys will still buy it no matter what there do,

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

has anyone looked at the Samsung I7500 yet? or the Toshiba TG01?

I dont think that eithier are out yet but both look promising tbh. May go and have a look at the Magic on the way home and have a play.

Does anyone know of any other Andriod based phones due in the next couple of months?

I still maintain that Android isn't the finished product yet. There are also some things that are trying too hard not to be an iPhone. But the longer you live with it the more it makes sense.

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

I'm looking a getting something similar to the iPhone but am considering the HTC Magic and possibly the new LG Viewty Smart (crap name!).

The only thing that is putting me off about the Magic is that the camera is supposed to be a bit poor and there is no flash which would be fairly essential to me for taking embarassing pictures of drunken mates when out clubbing.

Would the LG Viewty Smart be a viable alternative? Can't seem to find any reviews or feedback on it at the moment so I'm not sure what it's Web capabilities, etc are like and if it would be worth a punt???

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

I found myself doing all sorts of 'technical' comparisons between devices some time back. I ended up talking myself into getting an HTC TyTn II.

Absolutely the worst decision I have ever made. Sure it can do this and this and this and that and there are boat loads of programmes for it and it is highly configurable. But I HATED using it with a vengeance. I loathe Windows Mobile too. As a phone I found the device and the interface atrocious and really didn't enjoy using for anything else.

Then, rather than tech comparisons I thought long and hard about what I REALLY wanted a mobile device to do. Having done that the iPhone ticked all of MY boxes (especially with new Apps like SPB Wallet). It does what I need really well and I really enjoy using it.

For me I think it is so much down to personal choice. For some, WM will be essential for me, thankfully not.

The iPhone gets TONS of use, the TyTn sits gathering dust as I can't even be bothered to box it up and sell it.

Re: iPhone Competition / Alternatives

Decisions, decisions...!

I think I want an iPhone, but with the rest of you - I feel somewhat let down with a few extra features that Apple added to make the 3GS. Plus theres the initial outlay and over priced tariffs (£274.23 cost, £35 p/m x18).

I want a phone that I can browse the internet (wifi & 3/3.5G roaming), playback mp3's and mixed video (divx, slingbox, iPlayer, youtube), run capable GPS software and internet orientated apps such as Skype and Messenger, a camera that can take ok-ish pics and vids.

I've norrowed it down to:

Samsung i8910 HD
Nokia N97
Palm Pre
HTC Magic

Of course these too have their pros and cons:

Nokia N97
-theres going to be bugs initially
-symbian OS (not sure I want this on my next phone, find it limiting/dated)
-resistive screen
+well built
+nice slide/keyboard

Palm Pre
-too business orientated for my needs. I maybe wrong, but see it in same vein as a BB

Samsung i8910 HD
+screen; OLED, capacitive, large
+media playback, browsing
+HD camera
-large form, bulky
-SymbianV5 OS - same as N97

HTC Magic
-no audio jack
-build; looks flimsy (not had a feel of one yet)
-Android not established
+Android (new and exciting)

At the moment, I feel I want to get a Magic offline (c.£350) and go with O2 simplicity 600mins/unltd txts/unltd data £19.98.

well the iPhone fits what you want perfectly, unfortunately. I have looked into it and just to let you know that CURRENTLY their are no turn by turn sat nav products for these phones bar Nokia with it's Nokia Maps if you subscribe or the iPhone with it's new TomTom.
Obviously this will hopefully change, Orange have launched Orange Maps but again is limited to what smart phones it works on.
Ask the moderator of this forum as he has a Magic, I don't think the build is bad and you can get a USB to 3.5mm converter for peanuts.
Resistive screen are also still VERY good, lots of people use handwriting recognition and so use them but I THINK the Omnia uses capacitive?

The Pre does appear to be directed at business at the moment, I have been on here flipping my ideas of what I want LOTS! I really like the looks of the Satio as I want a good camera, BUT the sample shots I've seen from the Pre look stunning and it's that user interface of Android, WebOS, iPhone that keeps drawing me, they look so fresh next to Symbian S60. I will wait till the end of the years as I want a phone that will last me for a long time, by then there may be new Android phones out with better camera's? If not I may see a Pre in the flesh and fall in love
