If you haven't played a MGS game before (me!)

Is it worth getting MGS 4?. I'm getting a PS3 for Christmas and along with LBP, i'm looking at getting another game. Was thinking about MGS 4 but i've never had a PS so haven't played any of the MGS series. Is it still worth getting as a stand alone game without the knowledge of the past story?

Thanks.

Re: If you haven't played a MGS game before (me!)

I was in a similar position to you myself, i had never previously owned a mgs game before, but quite a few of my friends had, and i had heard nothing but good things about it, both from friends and reviews. Then with the release of mgs4 winning such wide critical aclaim i got caught up in the hipe abit and decided to buy it. I'm glad i did, great gamplay, graphics and cinematography. Im also told the story line is amazing aswell, however it was kind of lost on me because there are many references to the older games which i had to look up or have explained to me. This includes one level where you revisit a place form an older game, and you have to replay through the original ps1 level as if having a flashback. Nice touch i thought. Howver there is a free to download mgs database you can get from the PS store which has a timeline of the story, and a database of all characters, objects and terms reffered to in the game and there defenitions. You will deffinetly benefit alot more if you have played the other games previously, however that said, i hadnt played them and its still one of the best games iv ever played.

metal gear is a pretty good series (not played msg4 yet its wrapped up for xmas)
but at £20 preowned you cant quibble
also gran torismo 5 prologue is a must (preowned about £10)
there are some good early release (preowned) bargains to be had for the ps3 now

Definitely.

There is a demo of MGS4 available for free download from the playstation store. You might like to try that if you have broadband and can wait till you have the console.

I have also seen MGS4 down to about £25 in gamestation and some game stores. My mrs got mine from a game used display for £15 and has wrapped it up till Christmas for me!

Rob.

Yes, definately! It's one of the greatest games ever made IMO. Not read the other replies so this may have already been covered, but you can watch the videos on Youtube which tell you all about the story so far.

I've seen this selling for £10 on Hotukdeals (in comet IIRC) over the past few weeks so go for it!

Re: If you haven't played a MGS game before (me!)

I was in the same position - when I got this game I had never played any of the previous games. My solution was to read up on the previous games on Wikipedia - worked like a charm
The game is absolutely awesome - I still haven't completed it. The gameplay is immense, the cutscenes are fantastic, and the overall game is faultless.
I've seen it brand new for £9.99 at Comet's website! But it's currently out of stock
