Difference between MGS4 online and MGO

In all the other threads I've asked in, no-one seems to be able to give me a straight explanation of what the difference between MGS4's online gaming and MGO is. I have MGS4 but what is the difference between the online part of it and the seperate game called MGO?
Thanks

I hope this thread clears up this issue for anyone else who is confused too.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized I posted this in the wrong section. Can a moderator please move it to the correct place?

Re: Difference between MGS4 online and MGO

I don't think MGS4 has a "online" game mode. The disc comes with a secondary game called Metal Gear Online (MGO). That is the online multiplayer game. MGS4 is the single player game.

MGS4 and MGO are different games.

What I mean is that is the MGO that comes with MGS4 the same as the MGO you can buy seperately?

Oh oh ok, then no there's no difference. The standalone MGO which you can buy is for Japan only anyway from what I know.

Thanks. But I've also read in some places that the one that comes with MGS4 is a starter pack. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks again

Re: Difference between MGS4 online and MGO

There is an expansion pack for MGO already, so perhaps the disc version includes that.

MGS4 disk has the 'free' MGO 'starter pack' with it. Once MGO is installed (from the mail MGS4 menu), you'll still need MGS4 disk to boot and then select 'MGO' from menu for it to load.

If you want to play the extra level/content you'll need to purchase the expansion packs, currently only GENE is available and another 2 are currently in production. Incidently all content for the expansion packs comes with the updates to MGO (version 1.0 is on the disk, 1.12 is current), when it is purchased it is unlocked for you.

MGO is also available as a seperate disk in Japan, pricing is simelar to GT5p, so I think its just the starter pack.

How do you update MGO to version 1.12?

Once MGO is installed it request the update when you connect to the servers.

You can do HTTP download (fast when everyone else has already downloaded the updates) and P2P (fast when everyone is getting the update at the same time).

I take it the update is not free because it has the content of the expansion pack?

The update is free and is required if you want to play online.... the extra content is opened on your account after you have paid for it. It worked almost instantly for me.
