Is anyone else struggling with this game?

When i say struggling, I mean struggling to get on with it.

I've got about half the way through but looking back over what I've done, I cant really say I've enjoyed it. Personally, (and I know this has developed into somewhat of a cliche) I think this game is crippled by the cutscenes. I wouldn't mind so much, but the majority of them are just so overbloated; the story is mind-numbingly dull at times (I really dont care about nanobots and war economies). Every cut scene simply seems a little too long. You get to the point where you just want to play, and there are moments in cut scenes where I really think you should be playing.

It's also very frustrating that you simply cant pick this game up and play it for 30/40 mins without the fear of hitting an unsuspected and entirely unpredictable-in-length cut scene featuring female scientists with an inexplicable desire to show 90% of their breasts (not a complaint, just a little odd).

Oh, and the bloke pooing himself. Genuinely not funny at all and seriously over-egged.

Snake's voice? More annoying and contrived than Batman's.

Anyway, purely my twopenniesworth and I am desparately trying to enjoy it as much as the reviews and the majority of people on this forum seem to be.

I just wonder if anyone feels the same as me. A colleauge at work echoed my thoughts and said he just felt like killing himself during the 90 minute ending. And very nearly did when it finished and that was it.

I'm genuinely thinking about trading it in next week before finishing it. Why shouldn't I?

Valid points, if you'ver never played any of the other MGS games you might not 'get' this at all.

Watch the cutscene you mention above again, and shake you're controller....you did ask for a reason not to trade it in

*Disclaimer: I should point out that "shake your controller" was not an euphemism for well you know...I meant really, shake your sixaxis.

Kind of with you on some of the things you say particulalry with regards to 'overbloatedness'. Here's two reasons to finish it, you can skip most of the cutscenes and it is actually an excellent game with or without them

Yeah, that's a fair point. What there is to play is pretty good.

Regarding shaking my gaming tool whilst that cutscene is on, I probably wont ever draw up the courage to sit through it again, but what happens?

There's obviously been a monumental amount of effort put into this game and they're taking us a step closer to the feeling of being placed in a motion picture. It's just a shame this would be the most boring motion picture ever made. I geniunely considered forking one of my eyes out during one of the mission briefings to liven it up a bit.

In view of your name, that's very funny.

If you dont like the cut scenes just skip them thats what i do if i save after a cutscene come off then realise ive got to sit through it again personally i do think kojima is trying to get a point across type in zero punctuation metal gear solid for a funnier view on what kojimas doing but anyway personally i love the cutscenes they wizz by i really get into them i didnt even realise that some of them were ten minutes long im on the last level of act 1 and have just gone though the cut scene where all the bosses appear and i thought it was great when one of the rebels started floating up and bending backwards then you those strings from that evil puppeteer

Crikey, that Zero Punctuation review sums it up perfectly. Redundant dialogue, script needs an editor. Couldn't agree more.

A real shame, but I've traded it in already. Never mind, I tried.

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

Bought it Saturday, been playing it ever since, so far its been one of the most wondrous gaming experiences I've ever had.

It helps if you love the other games however, otherwise alot of this game will make no sense at all.

You were basically experiencing the last act in a complicated film/book etc. There is a reason for most the things you complained about in your first post, even the guy pooing himself.

The only thing I would have removed cutscene-wise from the game is the stories after you defeat the bosses like Raven.

The ending is a 90 minute cut scene?!

I haven't bought this game yet, was thinking of doing so this weekend .. so no spoilers please .. but ***, 90mins of watching a cut scene is making me think twice about buying it at all now.

I never got the earlier games and when I heard about the length of some cutscenes it put me right off too. I keep telling myself I'll buy it for a rainy day when it goes into the budget range.

If you haven't played the earlier games and don't have any interest in the story you won't get that much out of it imo.

As much as I think you're right I will buy it sometime and play through anyway because I hate missing out on a good title because of a pre conception, I like to give games a chance to prove me wrong when they're big titles.

I've played the 2nd and 3rd and I know that they tend to have long cut scenes but 90 mins is just a joke

I played MGS1 and 2 but not 3 but couldn't remember hardly any of the story. I read about them on wikipedia so I was up to speed and it made a massive difference for MGS4

The fact that it didn't feel like a 90 minute cut scene says to me it worked just fine.

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

Right, my 2p's worth.....

Never played any of the other games before, that said, the cut scenes aren't 1/2 as bad as I was expecting....and being able to skip them just bypasses that moan.

I HAVE been having problems in the red zone, after picking up the metal gear 2 robot. I had read that I had to stay on the good side of the militia.......but they always attacked me when i got to their hideout. Well I guess that was because I had been killing them . I thought the dudes hiding behind the sandbags infront of the door were enemies for some stupid reason. Donkey brain that I am. As soon as I killed the right people it's been plain sailing!

Coming from a PC background I hate (always have and always will) the silly checkpoint system. Can't abide having to do bits again. I just want to pick up where I left off. The Mrs has just kicked me off so she can watch TV and I've had to pause it. Just silly I think. Don't care that it makes things "too easy". People can CHOOSE when to save!!

To me, the game is okay. Just like a splinter cell game on my PC (I guess THEY came from the MGS range however)!

When I play this again, I'll being killing everything!!!!

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

I'm still on the 1st act.

Because of how slow pace the game is and the long cut scenes, i simply don't have enough time to sit down and pay for a few hours.

I do plan to play and finish the game though at some point.

It's a stunning looking game but a chore to play

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

Ive just started playing this after borrowing it off a mate. Never played the previous ones and am finding it difficult. The control options are a bit over the top i think, but the visuals are stunning. If future games look like this then it will be a gaming bonanza for the PS3. The video scenes are a bit tedious but as a noob i feel they help in the overall "what the ***** going on" part. I shall keep going until i get too frustrated that the motion sensors in my remote get tested when they bounce off the wall.

I highly recommend that if you don't know the story have a look at these even if you've already started MGS4;

I still haven't got round to playing this and i have a feeling that i won't be playing at all now.

I'd never played MGS before and bought because of the hype. It's not quite my cup of tea and with all the HUGE releases on the way that i do want, i'm thinking it would be a god idea to sell now

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

I've just finished act 3 tonight, seriously long cut scenes towards the end. I'm enjoying the game but I find myself tuning off in the bits when there's a character telling a story with some strange black and white graphics (can't think of a better way to explain it), but the normal ones aren't so bad .. easier to follow and look great. I still find it abit frustarting at times though.

fixtures_man

Charge the rail gun to lvl3 each time and hit them as early as possible. I found this quite hard too and it took quite a few goes, but big rail gun charges is the way to go

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

Should i trade GTA IV in for MGS4?

Seriously thinking about it, and any views would be great!

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

I bought this game on release and found the cutscenes sufficiently off-putting to not play it more than an hour.
Now I have come back to it and am generally enjoying the gameplay, but tend to skip the cutscenes.
I loved MGS1, liked MGS2, thought MGS3 was "ok".
This is very dissappointing.
The number and length of cutscenes is a DISGRACE, and seems like a practical joke. Snake's voice is unbelievably annoying and the idea of a 90 minute ending is revolting.

And snake can't climb over 3 foot walls? Really? Come on...
Many times I have tried to sneak around and then been found. Unfortunately the game is very limited: as soon as I get found I easily run to the next checkpoint without dying: so there is little incentive to sneak.
MGS1 was a genius game. This is so poor in comparison. How the hell did IGN and gamespot give this 10/10???!!!

A very annoyed MGS fan...

Re: Is anyone else struggling with this game?

Traded my copy in for 20 quid in hmv this morning, couldnt beleive i got that price for it - think thats what i paid from shopto a while back.

Hadnt played it for a few weeks and couldn't really see it getting a look in for the foreseable future..

Really enjoyed the gameplay but didnt have a clue what was going on with the story line so the cut scenes etc were wasted on me.
