I completed the game in just shy of 21 hours although that was on the easiest difficulty setting. I was ranked Lobster. Yes, I'm a wuss but seeing as MGS 4 is so heavily driven by its story, I wanted to be sure I could finish it. On reflection I perhaps should have played it on the second difficulty, the one below Normal, because it was a bit
too easy. However, I did thoroughly enjoy every second of the game from start to finish. I was even engrossed by that 60+ minute epilogue which wrapped everything up nicely. I even confess I got emotional at the bit where it looked as if Snake had shot himself, almost to the point of shouting NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at the screen! Fortunately, there was more to come and it was well worth it.
I have to confess that although I played the previous two games on the PS2 and Twin Snakes on the GameCube (I never played the PSone original), I was never a big fan of the series, mainly due to the excessive Codec screens, the somewhat clumsy controls and awkward camera angles. Fortunately, all those things were addressed for MGS 4... the Codecs were less intrusive, the third-person camera was an absolute joy - the over-the-shoulder one is my favourite - and the controls were just brilliant, although initially complex until mastered. The graphics engine was really impressive, nice to see a game looking this good and running smoothly with no screen tearing for a change. As far as the art design and cutscenes go, I've not seen better anywhere else. I did notice some of the cutscenes were pre-rendered using the game engine rather than real-time as I couldn't manipulate the camera and Snake didn't look as he did in the game only moments before. To be fair, the real-time cutscenes are so good that if it wasn't for the fact that Snake's looks in those bits depends on what he looked like ingame I'd have swore they were all pre-rendered. Amazing stuff really. Voice-acting and music were all perfect too.
There were so many amazing moments but Act 4 stands for me because of the homage to the original game plus the level itself was incredibly atmospheric with all those echoey memories and stuff. Even the weakest bits like the start of Act 3 were still better than most games manage at best and at least this felt different. In fact, the game as a whole manged to capture the essence of all three MGS games: Act 2 was MGS 3, Act 4 was obviously the original MGS and Act 5 was reminiscent of MGS 2. Act 1 was a great start to the game too, Snake being stuck in the middle of a warzone and it was neat the way you had numerous ways to play it. You could, for example, play it entirely like Gears of War if you wanted, moving from cover to cover, taking out PMC troops (and Militia) or you could play it stealthily and avoid confrontation altogether.
The boss fights were also cool, one of them literally so, i.e. the one with Crying Wolf in the snow storm. Probably my favourite was the fight between Liquid and Snake in the Metal Gears... if only the Transformers game had been that good! Finally the on-rails vehicle bits were breath-taking, especially the motorbike one on Act 3. Shame they were somewhat marred by the constant loading screens each prompting you to press Start to resume, it was really unnecessary IMO, seeing as you can pause the game at any time anyway, even during the cutscenes.
MGS 4 is definitely the finest game on the PS3 by a country mile, worth buying the machine for IMO, and it's by far the best exclusive game I've played this year. In fact, I very much doubt it'll be bettered in terms of marrying an epic cinematic experience with exciting gameplay.
10/10!
