Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Please use the spoiler tags when asking and answering questions! If you don't know how see below.

Whats is the Spoiler Tag?
It masks the text so it cannot be read without highlight the text by selecting it with the mouse.

How to use the Spoiler Tag?
When writing a post click on this icon:

It will insert a pair of tags which you type the message inside. The text will automatically be hidden when you post your message.

What should I hide with the spoiler tags?
I guess common sense will go a long way with this one.

If it is something directly related to the MGS Story then Tag It!

If it is something like a poster of a sexy lady in a side room somewhere, I don't think that's a spoiler - unless giving the location gives away how the story progresses.

Things like mission objectives, characters names etc Can all ruin the surprise.

Ultimately, use your judgement, ask yourself if you would have felt a bit annoyed if it was something you would have liked to find out for yourself?

If in doubt, tag it, just in case.

I haven't played/don't remember the story?
No problem, there are apparently flashbacks during the game to recap previous key events.

You can also catch up by watching the rather good Gametrailers.com Retrospective on the whole series here:http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6748.html

And YouTube Videos of the Saga Volume 1 & Volume 2 DVD's that have come with previous games here: Metal Gear Solid Saga Volume 1 & 2 YouTube Videos, I recommend at least Volume 1 as it gives an intro to the different Snakes.

Additionally, there are a lot of fan websites.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

The chronological order of events is not the same order as the release order.

Chronological order would be MGS3, MGS1, MGS2 and then MGS4, so if you remember games 1 and 2 I think you'll do fine.

Edit: I've added some links to Post #1 where you can learn the story thus far.

If you want to be picky it would be MGS3, MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4

Surely if you were really picky you'd need the PSP games in the timeline too?! That's not to mention the NES releases which Kojima disowned

Do you think it was wise in the current climate to show Snake chain smoking for 8 minutes whilst the game installs...

Yea I know, but... you know - 'the kids' and everything.

Anyway, as I said, not bothered personally, just found it an odd choice!

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Really wanna go play this! (working from home) - I fired it up quickly just to install it and also to download the MGO update (which took about 5 mins! Thought I'd get in quick before the real rush).

Hmpf! I'm not even that interested in MGS games after I completed number 1 (still the only game I've ever finished ) but something about this tells me its going to be cool.

Oh and - love the iPod you get in the game - very cool and clever!

Argh I'm so bad, I keep highlighting little bits of hidden text to see what you're saying lol

I've added a bit to post #1 about what I feel should be considered when using spoiler tags.

Some places send out a day or so early to get it to you on release otherwise whats the point of buying from a site when you could get it from a shop! Thanks to the post offices interesting delivery times sometimes you'll get it early and sometimes you'll get it a few days after release (this is when the customer complains).

I got mine from a mate in the distribution industry instead of a retailer.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Have there been any reports of AOL users having trouble logging onto the online aspect of the game yet?

I was one of those people who struggled getting online with the BETA .... in fact, I NEVER once got to try the BETA, so I don't want to waste my money tomorrow if the game wont work with online play.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Hi guys,

I have the game already, it came this morning. Been playing the single player so far and have to say I'm really impressed the graphics and sound are fantastic.

Have tried Metal Gear Online and am getting an error message when I tried to start a new game, I assume it's because the servers are not live yet. The error message is as follows: Unable to connect to server 0931:00000000.

Can someone confirm that the servers are not live yet, or confirm if they are getting the same error message.

Thanks

Yup - agree MJ! Like I've been saying, I'm not the biggest MGS fan, but mightely impressed so far. Atmosphere, graphics, sound, action, immersion - got it in spades.

And fans of GTAs TV, have a play around with your controller when the game starts

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Hi mine turned up this morning- popped home from work at lunchtime. I only had time to install the game and have a blast on the virtual range before heading back to work. Superb control system- very much what we're used to in games like Resident Evil 4 and Uncharted. Fantastic. Just got to wait until this evening once the kids are in bed. Gonna be a long day!

One question: how do you use the iPod and can you access MP3 tracks from the HDD?

One thing I can criticise it on at the moment is the lack to redefine the controls. It was in MGO with the same scheme, so I find it weird not in the SP game.

I'd much prefer L2 to zoom and R2 to shoot like COD4.

With the iPod, I think its only there to provide you with all the music from the previous games that you can play when in the SP mode. Its a great touch though (works EXACTLY like a real iPod) and if you click L1 (i think), you can view the model of the iPod which is accurate right down to the perfect replication of the printing on the back of a real iPod.

And incase anyone is curious, its a 30gb iPod

Yeah this is my first MGS title and I was a bit worried that I wouldn't follow the story the same. The more I play it now the more I'm falling in love with it though . The AI is good as well, you really have to be tactical when hiding as they check every nook and cranny to try and find you if you alert them. The camouflage suit is a great addition.

If you have 5.1 surround get it hooked up to the PS3, this game is fantastic through it.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Play & Help Thread

Is it a video Ipod? It is a nice touch. Things like that really do a lot for merging the game world with the real world.

I wonder if the ipod is significant in some part of the game...actually I don't want to know

No, you cant play your own music, just MGS 'tunes'. There are also hidden ones to be found throughout the game.

Broken, I'm with you.

I keep highlighting the spoilers bits even though I know I shouldn't.
