First AV set up

First of I'm new to the world of AV forums, so hello all

This is my first serious AV set-up, I've had the LCD (Sharp Aquos 37")and the AV amp (Denon AVR 1908) for about 1 year but I have never had the time to or the lust to properly set it up with decent speakers.

I'm really into cars so my money has always gone their first. Now with a baby due soon I've had the realisation that a) I must tie up all those loose "wants" before the bambino takes my hard earned and that b) I will be spending allot more time at home... I'm still waiting on a centre speaker some rears to complete the 7.1

some pics (not anywhere as good as most set-ups on this forum)

Re: First AV set up

Thanks for the comments.

Surround speakers are at front because I guess I'm not AV savvy enough to know where they should really go.

I'm assuming they should be positioned more to the left and right flanks, but if this were to be the correct location then a) they would be in the way of the rear door and b) in the way of the kitchen doors; generally in the way!

I'm happy with the sound as they are positioned to be honest, but when the centre speaker and 2 x rears arrive then the sound stage will more than likely change so I may have to re-consider the positioning in the future. Food for thought.

Re: First AV set up

I hope this doesn't come across as patronising but, I think you're going to wrong way with your audio set-up. If you get an extra two rears and a centre, then you'll have an 8.1 set-up. Firstly, your amp (Denon 1908) can only support 7.1 audio. Secondly, 8.1 is an unheard of speaker set-up for home cinema, only some DVDs/BDs come with 7.1 let alone 8.1 so once channel would be synthesized.

IMO you should get the center, then reposition your two bookshelf speaker. Have one of them behind the brown chair, and one to the left of the floral sofa with both pointing towards the seating position. Then try your system with a conventional 5.1 set-up and see how it sounds.

Love the look of the room btw, and help the advice is of some help.

Re: First AV set up

How is it 8.1 ? 2 fronts, 2 surround, 2 rear and a centre + sub = 7.1 or it does where i come from

Scrap what I said before then, no idea how I managed to miscount the speakers. I still think that you should try 5.1 with a conventional rear speaker placement at the side of the seating position before going to 7.1 (then again, who'd take advice from someone who can't count to 7? ).

7.1 systems only really work well in large rooms. Your lounge looks a similar shape to mine with you sofa against the rear wall. For 7.1 to work well, you need 2 speakers (back surrounds) behind the seating area and the other surrounds to the rear sides of the room. I don't have 7.1 for this reason.

What Lewis said your losing all the effect of the rear channels with them stuck at the front. Nice tidy set up at least you dont have cables everywhere like mine

I have mine setup in a bedroom with the 2 backs either side of the bed pointing towards the screen and it does make a difference although not as much as if they were further back

Re: First AV set up

Thanks all, appreciate the expertise.

I'm going to spend my morning on Friday tweaking the surround speakers (before the missus gets up and gives me some for fettling).

I need my centre delivered and more speaker cable first! Going to hold of on the dipole rears for now then, put the money towards the Denon BR player I have my eye on.

Re: First AV set up

Hi all,

I relocated the surrounds with reference to forum members opinions (thanks). I used silver solder and heat shrink wrap to get more length. Would have bought new cable but I figured a silver connection is good enough and there is in my opinion no degradation in sound. Probably an AV no no but none the less..

In dilemma about the addition of the rears and also centre speaker as the sound is great. Wish I could test a centre speaker before buying...

Photos to be added later :o)

Re: First AV set up

Thanks for all your helpful replies

Added some additional photos; I am currently re-building a Mac mini to be a small form media centre. Getting a Harmony remote control next (just deciding which one) and then I am getting a remap for my car this month - back to my other passion where I spend my other life spending $$

PS. I bought the Bipolar rears and re-positioned the surrounds - sounds awesome - thanks for help guys
Will wait for a blu ray for now as I think the Denon models will be dropping soon!

Update this post as and when folks.

Re: First AV set up

Nice room and setup. Is that a robot hoover I spy in the corner. My father in law has five on the go most of the time.

Wouldn't mind too much but it's not even a big house, lost count of the times I have been tripped by the little b*gg*rs

Re: First AV set up

It looks good.
Do you have any plans to wall mount your telly because i think that would work well but it does look nice as it also.

Also at the back of your sofa i think putting a nice brown mirror there might be a nice effect and putting that picture on another wall.

Anyway it looks nice.

Yes that is a iRobot Roomba 530 eagle eye; but then again if they are your Achilles heel, you probably would spot them straight away

It has been re-housed into the hall because the missus didn’t like it there, besides Roomba always seemed to head straight out into the hall when switched on - I think it was AI's version of the great escape!

Info on iRobot Roomba can be found here

Thanks Milly; I would have to consult my better half and see what she says but I do agree; I have just fiinished installing the shelves in the corner (finished late last night ) so I think a little change is on the cards, I have a few more posters too which are framed (mostly relating to movies like Pulp Fiction, loathing and fearing in las vegas to name a few) so they could be introudced at long last.
