Talking Psmeg's new living room install

Hi all,

I've been looking over many of the threads in this part of the forum for a long time, planning what I'm going to be doing, changing my mind when I see something totally different that looks cool, and now I'm in the process of actually putting the plan into place.

Stage 1 started a few weeks ago after a new central heating system was fitted, which gave me the opportunity to rip out the disgusting 1970's stone fireplace!

So, after removing the stonework, finding pine cladding that had been plasterboarded and plastered over covering the remainder of the fireplace, we got stuck in with big grins!

Sadly, things stayed like that for a while until today, which saw the builders coming in and getting stuck in to the false wall.

Tomorrow should see them finishing that off and making a start on plastering the walls, and covering the horrible artexed ceilings with nice smooth plaster.

Anyway, I've added a few images of the work in progress, and will update it over the next few days while they are working on it.

Once that is done, it's a case of installing the oak shelves into the alcoves, skirting and painting, mounting the plasma and speakers then get the carpet fitters in and start looking for a nice oak AV unit to sit under the plasma to house the Onkyo 606, Media Centre, Xbox 360, PS3 and Sky+....

Well, that's it for today.. more piccies tomorrow!

Cheers Jayden28,

A fair bit of work has been done today, so as soon as the builders have left for the day I'll add some pictures and an update..

Re: Psmeg's new living room install

::::Day 2::::

Cheers for the comments guys, it's much appreciated.

There's been a fair bit of activity here today, with only the living room ceiling and some touch up work left for tomorrow and the builders are done.

The chimney breast has been boarded out and plastered with the holes cut for the face plates to pass cables through as well as the speaker cables being embedded for the front speakers.

The ceiling in the front room (dining area) has been plastered today and is such a massive improvement over the disgusting artexed fans that were originally there.

The ceiling in the living room (due to be plastered tomorrow) is pretty rough, and should be another massive improvement once completed.

The wall bracket for the plasma was installed and tested today to ensure it was positioned correctly, and to see how strong it was... all I can say is you couldn't get the thing to move with only 2 screws in place, so when all 6/8 are used it should (fingers crossed) be fine for the plasma install.

I've semi settled on the AV unit to house all the equipment, but they are apparently (as informed by an Alphason rep) difficult to get hold of at the moment, and I may have to wait until mid April to get my mits on one....

I'm going to get an Alphason Finewoods FW1350 in light oak (Light Oak Real Wood Veneer TV Stand for screens up to 60 inch FW1350-LO/B) which should tie in nicely with the oak shelving unit to go into the alcoves.

I've added a few more piccies of today's work to the thread and will update again tomorrow when the builders have finished.

P.S. Volume, I've got a set of Kef 1005's to install, and I love em...

Re: Psmeg's new living room install

Hi guys,

There's been loads of work undertaken over the last week or 2, including a new oak kitchen being fitted, decorating and carpet laying (today).

I've got a few more decorating things to do, but I'm off for a long weekend with family, so I'll get some more piccies when I get back.

Ordered the Alphason stand, which should be here some time next week; so that'll be cool. :0)

The new carpet is stunning and I replaced all the underlay with Cloud 9 foam underlay that has excellent acoustic dampening properties, so that should help improve the sound from the AV setup. Not to mention, 10mm of sponge underlay really adds to the luxury of the already pretty thick new carpet.... lush!

Re: Psmeg's new living room install

Well, even though it looked like I'd given up on this thread, there has been additional work undertaken and I've posted a (not very good) photo below of where it is as of closing today.

As you can see the decorating has been done as has the new carpet (complete with lovely new Cloud 9 underlay, which is fantastic!)

We've just finished installing the shelving into the corners and now have to finish the skirting replacement and sealing, etc.

That should be most of the things done in the living room. I'll pop a few better pictures up when it's done.

Cheers

Paul

Cheers Monkey,

The photo isn't really doing it justice; I'll take some better ones as soon as the final touches have been completed.

Hi - nice setup. Did you take the metal chimney lining/flue out when you removed the gas fire?

cheers.

They are from Ikea, part of the Billy range with some of the shelves replaced with glass alternatives :0)

Hope that helps

Hey, it's what was on at the time... lol

It was a wireless media keyboard in front of the 360, but (as with the first one I bought) decided to simply stop working one day. Shame, as it was a nice keyboard too :0)

Just thought I'd post an update as the TV, 360 and media centre have changed since the original images as well as the addition of part glazed doors to the shelving units.

The old Hitachi 42" plasma has been replaced by a Samsung 50" 1080p plasma.

The house is now using an 8TB NAS box that streams media to the bedroom, living room and wirelessly to any other systems (i.e. iPad, office / study / bedroom PC's, laptops, etc.)

XBMC is used as the main front end for all connected systems alongside iTunes for music streaming.

This is how it looks at the moment. :0)

I think there comes in a point in ones lives where feeling the need to tell the world about what underlay you have merits the need for you to take yourself outside and having a very long hard talk with yourself.....

Now run along, and while youre on your way have a look in the mirror and see what type of man youve become lol

Catw37---That's 2 snide remarks you've made on 2 different threads. What's the point?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you have any knowledge of how these forums work, and in particular this section of the forum you would know that it generally includes more than just what amplifier or TV is being used. This usually includes information about the whole project, including the small details about things llike underlay.

If this isn't something that you have an interest in that is fine, but maybe in the future you should refrain from commenting on topics and threads that hold no interest for you.

Now, please feel free to run along and have a look at yourself in the mirror on the way past!
