Russell.Williams Big Telly

I've finally got off my fat arse in order to put some piccies up.

Some of the images may have a slightly odd perspective. It's because I use a photo stitching program to create Quicktime VR 360deg panoramas. A happy offshoot of this is that you can select areas of the panorama and flatten it into a rectangular image, hence the distortion. The entire QTVR is stitched from a total of 20 images.

***EDIT***

If it's of interest to anyone, the 360deg Quicktime panorama now available to view here. Give it time to load, it's 6mb.

Kit List

-Screenplay 7205 shining on an 88" Carada Criterion screen.
-Toshiba 32WLT66
-Michell Syncro with Rega RB250 and Audio Technica AT-OC9 moving coil cartridge.
-NVA MC two box phono stage and PSU.
-Denon DVD-3910.
-Sky HD
-Apple iPod 4th gen - the audiophiles choice.
-Denon AVR-3806
-Velodyne SMS-1
-PMC GB1 main speakers
-PMC TB2M-C center speaker
-M&K Xenon LCR-25 tripole surrounds
-Mark Grant interconnects
-Van Damme Blue Series speaker cable
Oh! And a BK Monolith DF sub, incase you didn't already know.

<EDIT 13/07/08> Compare and contrast with post #111.

The Rack:

Room views. Front:

Front right:

Right:

Back:

And finally a composite image of room with lights on and screen with light off, and yes, I know it needs updating:

Apart from hanging the screen level and running four sets of cables for the surrounds, it's been a mercifully DIY free setup. The eagle eyed will spot the lack of rear surrounds, which were disguarded when I chose to biamp the main front speakers. The tripoles give such a good spread, bouncing sound off the front, rear and opposite walls, I don't miss the rears. But the cables are still there. Just in case.

Arriving later this week, a Vogels EFF 1140 LCD and center speaker stand. That should just about finish things off. Until the next thing I think of.

re: Russell.Williams Big Telly

This might sound stupid, but is anybody else having trouble viewing the images?

Sometimes they're there, somtimes they're not. Pesky Photobox!

Anybody who knows more about pooters than me, please respond.

In the mean time I'll repost them as links and see if that holds up.

Russell

Lovely looking room Russ.

I've finally got around to bi-amping my fronts with my 3806 after reading your earlier thread, really impressed with the difference (My Mum even noticed somthing was different, so it must be an improvement).

What are your thoughts on the Carada screen? I'm considering going for one for my new install, as I won't need a retractible screen in the new room.

Verry nice Russ, love the speakers.

Dose that sheet of wood you have the monolith standing on make any difference to the sound quality. I remember reading the thread where you made it, but cant remember your comments on SQ. As i might have to experiment with positioning when i get mine that might make it easyer to move around. Yours is the same colour i am thinking of as well, and the finnish looks exelent

Now that is good news.

The pictures distort it into looking even bigger than it actually is too.

I know. And some people claim it makes no difference.

Very nice it is, although, probably broadly in line with any other decent PVC based screen in the 1.4 gain region. What IS worth paying for is the gorgeous fine velvet covering on the frame. It gives pictures a really hard, crisp edge you just don't get off a pull down.

I'll tell you what made a bigger difference than upgrading the screen though. Painting the room dark blue. It's actually a darker colour than the piccies make it look. Now that really did boost contrast. Picutures fairly leap off the screen now, especially HD.

Cheers,

Russell

Yeah, that was on page 1,918,043 of the DF thread. No, it doesn't make that much difference by itself, probably because I'm on a hard floor anyway. What did make a very small difference, is that it allowed me jam enough Sorbothane feet underneath it to isolate it properly from the wood lamate flooring. Before, there were distinct vibrations through the floor at certain frequencies, but honestly it just occupied me during a dull afternoon.

Just one gripe, I would prefer the PJ screen to be hidden. Makes watching the Toshiba LCD easier, without looking up to see a hugamongous screen if you get what I mean

How do you guys keep these rooms so tidy ???

Fantastic room.

And you are right, turntables like that ARE a work of art, When ever I can I make a point of viewing "artistic" turntables - The build quality is amazing on many.

PMC speakers - Always nice to hear.

(One small thing - the BLUE LIGHTS from the kit would annoy me.......Maybe you left them all on just for the photo, they look nice (ish!) like that, but for a film would be off )

And indeed, for films, they are off. The room, alas, isn't always so tidy.

There are some beautiful electronic components, but turntables are pure mechanical engineering. I think that's what so nice. You know a human hand was involved at some point. It's like a coal fire versus gas.

Cheers

It's Farrow & Ball Ballroom Blue. The webpage colour swatch doesn't look like it anymore than my photo's do. It's just a nice muted, mid blue. IIRC, it was about £46 for five litres, but from taking the screen down, moving the furniture, painting two coats, putting the screen back up and sitting down to watch telly took about six hours dead. It covers really well and dries quick - worth the extra IMHO.

I had designs on constructing a pelmet to hide a tab tensioned drop down, Mrs. russ.will wasn't too keen on living in a DIY front room hell for a few days, then the Carada came up, then I spent the difference on the GB1s, etc, etc.

Ironically, because we use the PJ more than the Toshiba, it's the Tosh that gets in the way because It means I can't leave the center speaker on the higher shelf where it sounds best. I tend to move it up for films.DVDs and make do for TV viewing.

This should help and is arriving by the end of this week.

Cheers

I actually drive past the church clock, to which you refer, on a regular basis.

As to the honey, well, it's all wrapped around a rather large ham I roasted for Xmas.

Cheers,

Russell

PS. Did you get sorted on the test tones?

re: Russell.Williams Big Telly

Cheers Mate,

It was you, goading me into posting some piccies, that made me do it.

My other hobby is photography (it's even earned me some money) but unless I'm travelling, I can't be arsed to pick up the camera, especially during the winter. When I'm abroad, I'll shoot 500+ pictures per week. Being places where I feel truly foreign gives me inspiration that I don't otherwise, get.

Thanks for giving me a reason to integrate my two great loves.

Russell
