By the way they are completely level, but the wonky wall makes them look a bit off.

I am going to make a CD storage rack next weekend.

Thanks, I think you actually owe me some money, I believe you were the main culprit for causing me changing my mind from simply adding 2 speakers to my monitor audio br 5 setup and causing me to upgrade all my speakers to the kefs

There are some benfits to living stateside! Do you see how high the ceiling is, I'm not sure I can have a lowered ceiling like yours,

Martin's Dedicated Media Room

I'm going to have to measure. I like the lighting you have in your setup, woud work well hooked up to my remote controlled lights

Cheers

I just measured and the height of the original ceiling in my room is 230cm. The lowered part drops it by 8cm. I'll post some more information on the LED lighting shortly.

Just checked mine, the height is about 212cm, so maybe I could do something.

Thanks

Well the transformer arrived on Saturday and after realising I needed to change the current on the back of the box to 110 it worked a treat, the svs is now working!

The transformer doesnt run hot at all and is completely silent so am very pleased with that.

However... I am quite underwhelmed by the performance of the SVS SB12 in my room, I'm not sure its going to be powerful enough. That being said I havent spent too much time tweaking any settings so I am sure the performance can be improved a great amount.

All in all I'm happy enough, it stops my immediate need to buy a sub.

Cheers

Yeah, the problem you have is the massive volume of air in the overall room.

If you closed some of it off, wahey.

Glad the transformer worked out for you

Looking brilliant mate, excellent results with the DIY racks especially for your first carpentry attempt!!

The idea of having a bar at the back sounds awesome and would really top it all of.

A few updated pics..

Entrance into the lair..

Built some Storage for CDs, the bottom shelf was intended for xbox games, but it turned out I had more CDs than I realized so ended up being just for Cds..

I was going to put a bar in this area, but now am planning on mounting a TV on that wall and having a basement mini lounge, it gets quite hot and humid in the summer here so will help keep the aircon costs down as the basement stays cool. Fortunately I have about 8 months to get this work done.

Q300's now wall mounted

This blacked out window I stored some DVDs

Then I moved the picture over it, when the picture was in the middle of the room it got a lot of reflection from the projector and was a little distracting

I now have the SVS SB12 setup, the box next to it is the transformer to convert to US Power, works well and is silent.
Initially I was very underwhelmed with the performance but after a little tinkering it now performs ok, watched Battle LA last night and it was definately doing a good enough job (I will upgrade at some point but am happy enough for now)

I do really want a new projector, but to be honest I still am pretty happy with the Sanyo, I think I'm gonna wait it out a while longer in the hope that there will be some bargains over the next 6 months.

Heres a few pictures I took this morning, not the best photos unfortuantely

Seeing as I'm in Chicago I put I Robot on..

The PJ has currently done about 1500 hours, I have an unused lamp so may put that in, maybe it will provide a slight improvement.

Cheers

So I'm now thinking about putting up some velvet panels in the lair like many have done in this thread

Maximising image contrast.

I am thinking of doing the area highlighted below:

I would probably frame around the screen so that I could have a manual masking system for the various aspect ratios.

Whats everybodies thoughts on this? I think SWMBO thinks I'm mad, I think it will look ok and will definately add to to the movie experience. It will be quite costly if I do it, probably about $500 for velvet.

I cant seem to get the Devore that everybody raves about here so will go to the local fabric shop to buy the blackest velvet they have..

So I started the project of creating the black velvet panels. The process was to make the panels was quite straight forward.

Heres me waiting for the fabric shop to open! Obviously a very popular place to be at 930 on a staurday morning

I then made some wooden frames to attach the velvet to (stapled on) Attaching the velvet was quite easy, just had to make sure to the material was stretched across the frame with enough tension so there were no wrinkles.

To attache them to the walls I used velco, after sticking the velcro to the frame I stapled it down so it would stay on if I removed the panels from the wall. Rather than sticking the other side of the velcro directly on walls I screwed small pieces of wood to the wall and attached the velcro to that (Other forum members reported the velcro woud rip the plaster off)

I really happy with how they look, I will be covering the ceiling this week at some point, and I need to make some panels for the baseboards to the panels on the wall to complete the effect.

I am also now thinking of puttinga false wall up to the start of the first side wal panel so I can create a ’Blackhole’

Cheers

I am really happy with it, I knew it would look good but you always have nagging doubts, especially when you have to spend almost $500 on fabric! I can't wait to finish the ceiling and baseboards , I just need to try and stay out of the pub on my way home from work this week otherwise it'll have to wait till the weekend....

Look forward to seeing how you tackle the ceiling........

Mist if by best ideas happen over a few beers, I'd had a few when I decided to do the velvet!

I am planning the same as how I did the walls with the exception of making sure the small wooden pieces I used to attach the velcro to will be attached to the studs rather than just plasterboard, I'll also probably use a little more velcro but the stuff is pretty strong.

I'll definately take pictures of the process for attaching to the ceiling though.

Cheers

Made some progress, covered up the baseboards

Had a bit of an issue when i made the panel on the left wall though, I had to use the second roll of velvet and the velvet appears to be a few shades lighter.. If you look carefully you can see it.

I'm going to see if I can get a better match from the store this weekend.

Still got the ceiling to do but wont do this until I can be sure the velvet is a good match.

I have people over this weekend so I will just enjoy the fruits of my labour and not do any work..

Cheers

Some things are cheaper other things more expensive, definately get more house for the money.

I want a JVC PJ and they are probably more expensive out here in the states...

Success! Finally got back to the fabric shop to see if they had a better match, and when she looked they had a roll left from the same batch / colour dye! Today I want to get the ceiling done.. hopefully will have some pictures up tonight. So relieved I can't tell you!
