Dave`s AV Room

Hello All,
I thought it`s about time I shared my set-up with you all after seeing so many quality rooms.
I`m about to make some alterations which will include a 2.40:1 aspect ratio screen, Devore Black Velvet treatment on the screen wall and around the far-end section of the side-walls and ceiling and then ultimately install an anamorphic lens for a CIH set-up.
So here`s some pics of the room as it is now

A view from the seating position. 50" Sony TV for casual viewing on a custom-unit.

The camera flash makes the room seem lighter than it actually is.

Ignore the black disc storage unit. A failed project that`s being pulled down when I`ve designed something else.
You wouldn`t believe the trouble I`ve had trying to find a matt black, durable finish paint that`s non-reflective.

A 92" Stewart Firehawk mounted on large blocks of wood bolted into the brickwork to allow the screen to drop in front of the curtains.

A close-up the Stewart case and logo. The tattiness on the wall and ceiling is where I`ve removed the pelmet I built to enclose the screen. I need quick access to it now it`s up for sale.

The screen in action. It`s triggered by the projector so drops automatically. The picture`s not as high up as that when you watch a film, a bit of camera trickery I think.

Close-up on the Firehawk logo. Worth every penny, a stunning screen.

The fronts are B&W 685 on Atacama stands filled with gravel. There`s 2 Rel Q150E subs on RS Acoustics granite plinthes. I was dubious beforehand but the combination of a HAA calibration and the Auralex sound absorbers around the main speakers improved the sound quality no end !

Equipment rack. The cause of the big electricity bills!
The driving force is a Denon AVC-A1HD amp that`s bi-wired and bi-amped to drive the front 3 channels. An Arcam P1000 power amp drives the 4 surrounds. The rest of the gear is Sky HD, Pioneer Elite Multi-Region Bluray, PS3, Toshiba XE-1 HD DVD, HTPC, Sony PVR and Philips DVD Recorder.
The Sky HD box is knackered; I`ve had to send the power supply away for repair and upgrade.

The rear of the room. The 4 surrounds are B&W DM601S2 and the projector is Infocus IN82. Some cool posters as well.

I`d love to lower the surrounds a bit but the door`s in the way.

The Infocus IN82. A shiny black box of wonder.

My small model collection. I did have a cool T800 Terminator Endoskeleton but it fell off the cupboard and broke. I do like the retro Star Wars posters and not forgetting the Darth Vader Lightsaber.

So that`s where I`m up to after years of hard work and upgades. I watched Transformers 2 last night and whatever you think of the film, the AV quality is staggering. Certainly the one to beat at present.
My new screen should arrive in a couple of weeks and then the changes begin, so more pics to come in due course.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers Guys,
Dave

Re: Dave`s AV Room

Nice looking room & some very nice equipment. How about some screen shots of the pj in action?

Just one question. I've always wondered when I see projector screen that comes down and sits above a tv, does the tv distract you at all when watching the big screen?

Re: Dave`s AV Room

Now thats what you call a proper boys room! Love the sound of the changes you have planned. Loads of great kit and I can't fault you one bit in your choice of posters and figures!

I love the look of that Stewart screen. Fancy throwing it my way when you get your new one?

Hi Dave Looks pretty good as it is... my only problem would have been seeing the projector screen sits above the TV, distracting you when watching the big screen..
Are you going to change that or will it be similar set up?

Thanks for the tips on the JVC Event I will keep an eye on it..

Sent you my detail give me a call if you like to take a look at what I have done. As I am finishing wiring today

Thanks dts197,
I don`t own a camera myself it was one I borrowed.
When I was doing the pics and the screen was down; Transformers 2 was in the player and I got some great stills and even using a tripod; when I checked the screenshots they were rubbish .
So I don`t know if it was the camera, its settings or user error. My photography skills are basic at best.
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks James,
Well obviously the TV isn`t on when I watch a film and it doesn`t catch any light from the projector beam. Even with the decor the room is very dark with the lights off and the TV has never distracted me.
With the alterations the new screen will be a bit lower down so the TV and unit its on will be sold. I`ll build a new unit for storage as well that`s a bit taller and longer and then the centre speaker will be a bit higher up and more a match for the fronts. I may then decide to have a flatscreen that can be hidden behind the new unit when not in use.
Cheers James,
Dave

Re: Dave`s AV Room

Hi mate, thats one sweet looking setup!

I'm looking to upgrade my kef iq1's/q2c to the 685's and the HTM62, and later a pair of 684's to replace the 685's at the front (all in black of course)!

Just wondering what you think of the 685's/HTM62?

Anyways, loving what you've got going on there Dave

Regards
Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comments
I`ve always used B&W since I started to become serious about home-cinema years ago. When I bought this new range for the fronts/centre I also had a HAA calibration done so with both of those and some Auralex Acoustic Panels installed the sound quality I was getting is way better than anything I`ve had before, these B&Ws are superb, very musical and detailed sound and a great balance for home-cinema or music use.
I don`t tend to read up on rival speakers for comparison, just stick with what I know.

I could do with finding out next week when the new screen is due because on Friday the Infocus IN82 went and I`ve ordered a JVC HD950 projector. I`m ready to make a start on the room alterations and I can`t wait
So there`s the Stewart Firehawk still available for someone.
Cheers Dave,
Dave

Re: Dave`s AV Room

Just when I thought I was ready to start mine I see this awesome room - great job Dave and thanks for some ideas

Quick question - do you find any condensation problems with having the tv near the window?

Also, do you have to draw the curtains during the day to watch TV?

I`ve never had any condensation problems, not that I remember anyway. With normal daytime tv viewing the curtains are left open but the blackout blind is lowered about 2/3 of the way down, so there`s still light in the room but you don`t get a large glare of light over the tv screen.
The tv should be going this week and then I can make a start.
Dave

Just a quick update gents.
The original plan with the new screen, because of its size, was to build a frame across and around the covered up window and get this square / plumb and then it would be easy to just hang the screen on this frame knowing it would be level in both directions. It would also make a good support across the whole length of the screen frame.
Change of plan that should be far easier and quicker
I`ve unpacked the screen to have a look at it and the frame is rock-solid cast metal that doesn`t flex whatsoever.
So, I can now adjust the brackets and screw the screen onto the window frame architrave instead.
There will be a small overhang either side of the window and a 3" gap between the screen and the wall, but this will be a perfect size to make the Devore velvet panels and get a flush finish.
With any luck the screen should be up by weekend

Shouldn`t be long now !
Dave

Been busy today.

Didn`t really want to board over the window but it`s either that or brick it up !
Main thing today was to get the frame built and up on the wall so I can get it centred and this will give me a sense of the image size.
And what a size, bloody hell

Dave

Brilliant set up- screen looks centered a little high though- should'nt the center of the screen be at eye level or is that just for Plasmas,LCDs- regular tvs etc...??

Yes, I understand it`s not ideal.
There is a blackout blind behind the boards which is down so that`s all you can see from outside. At least the boards are disguised by it.

It doesn`t really apply with projectors / screens. Looking slightly upwards gives you that authentic cinema view.
This screen is a good few inches lower than my previous Firehawk was, especially now the TV`s sold, but if it was any lower the image would catch the top of the speakers.

Had an unexpected extra pair of hands tonight, so I did this.

The material was quite easy to stretch onto the press-stud snaps, with 2/3 of it done there was still some ripples but then when you attach the last few snaps the whole surface just goes flat
The bottom brackets I decided to have on the outside of the frame for ease of installation and I need to use some shims behind them to make the screen plumb because the wall`s out. I can now just screw through the brackets without having to try and hang this monster blind.
The brackets will be hidden by the velvet frames anyway.
Another step closer
