why do my applications keep quitting?

as most of you know I took delivery of my new macbook yesterday and loving it.

the only thing is in the last 24 hours of use it has quit several applications and asked me to relaunch them. this is especially annoying when on the internet as when it relaunches it takes me back to my home page.

what could be the cause of this...I've got safari/mail/itunes open. Everything keeps running fine apart from this. Is this a new problem for 10.5 as it never happened on my old macs

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

I think mate it is a Leopard quirk, as i have noticed it a fair bit since upgrading. Hopefully they will iron it out soon.

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

You'll have read here that safari seems to fall over at the puff of a breeze at the moment - especially with this website - possibly flash-related ...

Glad you are enjoying your new mac though ...

Its happening to me since the upgrade to 10.4.11, mostly with Mail but others also.

Not a fix, but you can choose to Reopen All Windows From Last Session from the History menu in Safari. Seems as if Apple were pre-empting Safari crashes!

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

I've noticed huge problems when doing an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard on my 3 Macs. Instability, things not working right etc.

Doing a clean install of Leopard has completely done the opposite. This thing is fast, stable and just works (well the functionality I use does anyway).

Seem the upgrade process isn't a good as Apple claim it to be and suffers from the same problems that a Windows upgrade does.

If you can, backup your local disk to an external using SuperDuper or equivient, clean reinstall Leopard on it and see how that works for you. If it still crashes then I'd start to suspect hardware.

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

I've a brand new shipped-with-Leopard MacBook and an upgraded-to-Leopard PowerMac and they both have a flaky safari - seems the shipping version of 3.0 isn't as stable as the beta ...

For those with an intel-mac then Camino comes highly recommended as an alternative browser and BonEcho does specific PowerPC builds of Firefox for older macs ...

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

The beta was really flaky for me so I waited on the release.

However Safari hasn't quit once on my (10.5) MacBook or (10.4) iMac. Now Mail and other apps are falling over, Mail esp. others less frequently. Just goes to show how unique each of our installations is.

FWIW I would recommend Firefox all the way on either platform, those add-ins and java/flash controls are invaluable.

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

Skype always seems to crash on me - either half way through a video call or when the call has ended and hung up

Not useful

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

Off topic, but as Skype has been mentioned (and it never crashes on me - latest build) does anyone know how to place contact pics in the Skype cards?

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

That's really bizarre that you guys have all these problems. I work with 100s of Mac and everything just works. No crashing, no hanging and no kernal panics.

I wonder if the image of Leopard that Apple puts on all new machines has a problem?

Re: why do my applications keep quitting?

Don't know - but it is only skype and safari that quit for me.

I did a repair permissions this morning that found loads of problems with flash permissions, so fingers crossed that will fix the safari problem.

Looking at skype, apparently it is greedy and doesn't like sharing - so if you have ichat running at the same time it gets upset at the thought of sharing the isight cam, so have been trying only running one or the other app (tbh am preferring ichat at the moment)
