Hooking up a PS3 or a 360 to the new 27" display

"27-inch models also support input from external DisplayPort sources (adapters sold separately)."

The above is a quote taken from Apples website....

Does this mean that it would be possible to hook up a 360 or a PS3 to the new 27" imac?

If so that would be fantastic...(and even more justification to buy one!! )

It should be when the cables become available but I haven't see any expected release date quoted.

My mate went pass the store on the way to work,
and the guy at the store said it ,
only the 27" model will accept video input,
and will support all video sources....

but he doesn't know about the cables adapters yet...

Re: Hooking up a PS3 or a 360 to the new 27" display

This FAQ page makes for interesting reading. Hope that proves useful to gain more understanding on DisplayPort, it's market positioning and usage. Certainly made things a lot clearer for me.

Texex: The iMac specs show DisplayPort output support for VGA and DVI, and dual-link DVI, but nothing mentioned for input except DisplayPort itself. Have you seen any other information regarding getting video in via DisplayPort?

Anyone: How would you monitor the input on the iMac? Is there a new utility or would this be a 3rd party app do you think?

You can get DisplayPort to HDMI adapters so you'd think you could get this to work the other way round. No?

Read somewhere that you have to have the iMac powered on to get the screen up (suprise suprise), but no idea if playing something through the input takes over the whole screen or appears as a window on the desktop.
Would be best IMO if it took over the whole screen and the iMac could go to sleep leaving the monitor on.

Re: Hooking up a PS3 or a 360 to the new 27" display

Found this review that has this to say about the displayport -

Quote:
More interesting than the SD Card slot is that the Mini DisplayPort on the back of the iMac is now bidirectional. Right now you can find a cable with two Mini DisplayPort connectors, which lets you use the new iMac as a second display with another Mini DisplayPort-equipped Mac. You can hot-swap the cable between different systems without having to shut down, and the display management software is the most intuitive and most flexible we've seen. You can switch between extended and mirrored modes, and an icon-based orientation system lets you switch the extended orientation from side to side, up and down, or virtually any other configuration, as long as the two screens border each other. This capability also extends the useful life of the iMac, addressing a long-standing criticism of all-in-ones. Even if you someday demand a faster computer, you can always use the iMac as a secondary display.
So it has built in software to deal with the input. Guess it'll have to stay fully up to work which is a bit of a downer if you did want to use it as a display for Xbox/PS3 or Blu-ray player.

This seems to be the answer DP only.

And Apple drop the ball yet again!

Guess that's one sale they'll be missing from here. Really interested in getting one if I could have used it for my Xbox360 and maybe a blu-ray player.

came across this which might be of interest: Connecting A PlayStation 3 To Your iMac « Being BigMacky

Appears Belkin are on the case, but have pulled from their site the adapter that will make this possible. Some have commented saying that it is due for release in the new year.

Cached spec from the site is:

—————————————-
Belkin HDMI to Mini Display Port Adaptor
—————————————-
Part # F2CD007

Overview:
———
Belkin’s new HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter allows you to view HD content from your Blu-ray player, PS3, or cable box on your Apple LED-backlit widescreen monitor.

The adapter takes High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) content and converts it to the Mini DisplayPort format needed for the new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and new Mac desktops.

Because it enables high definition AV performance on your Apple LED-backlit Display, the Belkin HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter provides you the option to use it like a digital TV.

Features:
———
Converts the HDMI signal from any HDMI source—such as a Blu-ray player or an Xbox—and enables you to view it on the new Apple display.

Creates an all-digital connection between HDMI source devices, such as DVD players, DVD recorders, gaming systems, digital set-top boxes, satellite TV receivers and A/V receivers with the Apple display.

Belkin’s Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable can also be used independent of the Adapter to extend the video from your MacBook to your iMac LED-backlit display for an expanded desktop.

Specs:
——
Package Includes

Belkin HDMI to Mini Display Port Adapter

4ft Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable

4ft USB cable

Re: Hooking up a PS3 or a 360 to the new 27" display

If their is any sort of input processing delay it will be useless for gaming I would think. Possible lip-sync issues watching blu-ray unless you take the audio in as well?
