I'd like to see this country put more into sport personally, from grass roots up. It gives people (who maybe will not excel in other areas of life) something to strive for and sport is superb for both the physical and mental development of people. If we had more people interested in and participating in sport then i'm sure that we would have a healthier nation and less of an NHS bill. If more people had something to believe in and strive for then i'm sure we'd see less crime and anti social behaviour.

To much at the moment sport is not a factor for some parts of our society and only some people from certain socioeconomic groups ever get the opportunities. I love sport and would love to see us become more of a sporting nation than we are now.
i agree but the state of this country in terms of home grown talent is shocking.

they should make sports a serious subject in school for instance but nowadays its becoming a luxury and your lucky if your school takes sports ie P.E seriously. yes maths, english and science are important subjects but shouldn't sports be too? people say your either good at it or not but tbh if you have the will to practise and learn, you will become good at it. you dont have to be born a 100m sprinter or a football god to be good. you have to practise and train hard, somthing thats not hammered in the heads of our children

What's wrong with just using what's in London? This isn't the Glasgow & Manchester Olympics? The Emirates, White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge, Upton Park etc...could even talk the eggchasers into letting us use Twickers.
Spreading it around a bit was part of Tessa Jowell's attempt to say, "see it's not just about London. There's a match at Villa Park. Now back the bid."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/othe...tm#full%20draw

My second stop was Villa Park, a beautiful stadium which will stage football matches if London hosts the Games in 2012.

Villa manager David O'Leary, Birmingham manager Steve Bruce and West Brom's Bryan Robson were all there to sign our giant 'Back the Bid' flag.

These are three men divided by rivalry, but they have all come together to back the bid, and they were very enthusiastic about it.

After a 5am wake-up call, I began the day handing out leaflets in Birmingham city centre with council leader Mike Whitby.

We gave out some flags and pins and, considering people were walking to work bleary-eyed on a cold Monday morning, they were amazingly positive and upbeat.

They obviously wanted to know what is in it for Birmingham if London gets the Games.

I told them about our plans to relocate the five swimming pools and four sports arenas to the rest of the UK, which could well involve Birmingham.

It's not the locals that needed to support the bid - just the Olympic bigwigs.

I don't mind either way but I'm pretty sure Sydney didn't have to go around the grounds..

As long as the govt manage to get it all ready in time and stay within budget I'll be happy.

Just can't see either condition there being met...

Personally I'm not interested in the Olympics but a lot of people are. As long as I don't have to pay an Olympics Tax to fund it it's ok by me. A lot of people in Government are going to make quite a bit of cash as a result of it...that's what I don't like.

As it was being funded by a lot of taxpayers money there was a feeling that the public would need to be supportive of it. Also France would have said, 'Don't back London's bid it has no public support, our's has' or something. One way or another it was felt at the time of the backthebid campaign that the media and public should be on side. It's taken into account here:

http://www.gamesbids.com/cgi-bin/new...&id=1118060827

Public suport for Paris is marginally ahead of London's.

Madrid was also given an excellent review but with subtle hints that it did not measure up to the top three.

"Detailed plans were presented in [Madrid's] candidature file and high quality presentations were given during the Commission’s visit by the key organisations involved in the preparation of the bid."

Madrid's public support was highest of the five bids.

While Moscow had the second best public support, the report suggests the bid is far behind the others.

I can't wait. I'm so excited that I've been buying 2012 opening event tickets off ebay for £1000. They arrived this morning and appear to be written in crayon but the seller assures me that they are genuine and are very good seats. I can't wait.

Same here. I am going to buy as many tickets for different events as I can.
Me and the misses plan on taking the entire olympics off and going to as much as we can.

I had to smile when Tessa Jowett was interviewed in China this morning about the budget for the 2012 Olympics and she told the reporter that the budget was fixed and not a penny more would be available.

In view of the fact that it is highly unlikely that this Government will be in power in 2012 I assume that she is speaking on behalf of the Conservatives

That would be the revised £11 Billion figure and not the 2002 lie/estimate of £2 billion then?

She already knows it doesn't matter what the hell she says now as in 4 years time it won't be her problem. This shows why party politics is so funtamentally flawed.

2012 Olympic venues under review

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7586667.stm

Three 2012 Olympic venues in London are being evaluated by accountants to see whether they will deliver value for money, the government has confirmed.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) confirmed that KPMG are reviewing plans for the equestrian, shooting and basketball venues.

Equestrian events will be at Greenwich Park, shooting will be in Woolwich and the Olympic Park will host basketball.

They still haven't got a cat in hells of keeping to the budget. All the reviews alone with all the "expert" opinions will run into millions even before a brick is laid. It cost 2.5 mill for GB's 8 minutes at the hand over with that double decker bus. How much are all these expert consultants on an hour? It will cost thousands every time they get together and talk about it let alone anyone doing anything and when we look like being late on major developments the contractors will simply hold the government to ransom. The government simply hasn't done a good job of handling major contracts historically. Time and again they bail themselves out by throwing more tax payers money at it. Well what will happen now the money is running out, are we going to be asked to dig even deeper into our pockets to bail them out of this one in 3 or 4 years time?
