Lighting the flame

So, apparently, the choice is down to Daley Thompson or Sir Steve Redgrave.

Thompson is LOCOG's choice - good friends with Seb Coe, by all accounts - but the BOA would prefer Redgrave.

I'd have thought they might have thought about Roger Bannister as well, but I think Redgrave is the better choice. If I'm honest, I don't know what Thompson's done for the last 20 years or so!

What do you reckon?

Either Thompson or Redgrave would be good choices. They're both well known and amongst our greatest ever Olympians. Coe would also have been a good choice, but I suspect a few eyebrows would have been raised
Bannister is massively significant historically, but I don't think he ever won an Olympic medal.
I'd probably tend towards Redgrave simply because some younger people might be unaware of Thompson. But either would be great; no complaints from me with the short list.

I'd rather a collection of individuals if we are going down the 'legends route' maybe lighting 'fuses' at different parts of the stadium, or a young unknown the bid was all about inspiring youth etc.

I guess it depends on how they are doing it Barcelona didn't need a big name (used a Paralympic archer) can we think of a similarly spectacular way...Rory McIlroy with a 9 iron or a Joe Hart goal kick?!

As the flame is being lit in the stadium where all the track and field events are taking place they may aswell let the guy who is a legend in track and field do it.

Redgrave no question, even though I can't stand the man.

I think Daley Thompson whistling his way through God save the Queen might go against him.

Silly question so apologies in advance.

Will the torch light the cauldron at the beginning of opening ceremony, during or at the end of the opening ceremony?
