Ideas for first level

I spent all Friday night going through the tutorials in LBP.

So i want to create my own level but i just dunno where to start?

Seams so daunting when you play other peoples.

Where do you start?

Do you sketch it out fully first? Create the lanscape first, or start at the start and work till the end?

Any good reads on how to set about your own level?

Thanks

Re: Ideas for first level

I published two levels...

The first I made up as I went along. It was really just a way of testing out the various tools with some ideas that I had so no realy story as such, just a serious of challenges/obstacles.

Doing that gave me a much better idea of what I could and couldn't do so my second level I mapped out on paper first. It still changed a little as I actually created it of course, but it broadly followed my plan. I was pretty pleased with the result too

Funny though - some of the things I was trying to overcome in my second level they've patched in since - guess I wasn't the only one. I'm thinking specifically of hiding tools and changing the light (it really bugged me that you had to set the light once and keep it constant throughout the level).

Anyway - that's what I did and it worked for me. I've not played LBP for a while now - I may go back and try the new tools sometime

Good luck

Re: Ideas for first level

Oh, one more thing I just thought of. It's not really what you asked but may be useful...

The "heat" of your level (the thermometer saying how full it is) is increased dramatically by ojects that can move. I guess the engine needs to deal with the mechanics of the object, how it can move etc. So to keep the heat down stick everything down that isn't meant to move (glue, bolts, whatever you choose). Sounds obvious perhaps, but some people don't think of sticking down big objects like houses etc., but even though they're far too big to actually move during game play, if they're not stuck down then the game needs to calculate how they could move, hence the extra heat.

If you already knew this then just ignore, just thought you may find it useful f you're just starting with level creation

Re: Ideas for first level

I think the best thing to do is play about first, there's no point in trying to create a level if when you go to do it you realise what you can't do using the tools provided.

My only level is a simple maze (eMaze 398.1). As you can imagine it's a pretty simple design as far as contraptions go, so it was designed on paper.

I once read on a website "don't start making a level unless you know what you are going to make" that's a good tip I think.

Once you start playing about with things like pistons etc you might want to make a level based around that, so play about and see what you come up with.

Olso have a look on Youtube. There's tutorials and stuff which show you how to make things like cable cars and vehicles, very helpful for when you're starting out.

Re: Ideas for first level

I have my idea now, quite exited about it, not started it yet, but gonna crack on. i imagine it cantake weeks to perfect, so i think i'll start small and easy and get a level out there. I've had a good play with all the kit, though i think th best way is to get creating and learn as you go.

Should i finish the singleplayer mode first, as i havent totally finished teh story mode yet.

Will i not have got some got items to use yet?

eg. there's some funky music i've heard, but i dont have it to place.

Re: Ideas for first level

The music should be found in each single player level you play, found in a bubble somewhere.

Stickers and clothing are the only other things, oh and some backgrounds that you get from the SP game.

Everything else you need to create with you gain from doing all the tutorials.

I knew I would forget but I played it there. Some good ideas in it, my skateboard got stuck at the jump though.

Keep it up.

Re: Ideas for first level

Something been meaning to ask, just remembered now to post about it.

The level i created, i think is very sparse compared to other levels i've seen and played.

But the heat meter it at its maximum.

I followed the tip of fixing all big heavy items, any other tips to keep heat down.

I really don't know, can't see why it would have been so high.

Considering there isn't too much in it you could delet parts one by one and see what makes it go down the most.

That picture of your daughter (?) was cool, how long did that take to make and did it take up much heat? I might get a camera sometime.
