Did you install Ubuntu server? I comes without a GUI by default, although you can install one later if you like. Getting the file sharing to work can take a while - although there are a number of tools that help with configuring samba.

Personally I use MythBuntu, which is a server and a HTPC rolled into one. The configuration is very easy until you need to do something special.

I've haven't been having the best experience getting this to be exactly how i wanted it to work and after dipping my toe into the linux world i am going to setup a system using FREEnas. I've bought a IDE/CF converter to handle the OS and at least it'll give me an easy back-up solution.

I can turn my attention to something which i can access anywhere at a later date. As for ultimately hosting my own website i think that'll be on the back-burner for a while too.
