It depends what you mean by cheap. I unlocked my GT505 by purchasing an unlock code (around £20 - code had to come from LG). I typed the code in and unlocked the handset.
I think that you type 2945#*990# on a Viewty to get to the code entry menu (don't 'guess' codes or you may premanently screw the handset - my code was around 16 digits long)!
I also got rid of the crap Orange firmware - but that's another story!
As the Viewty has been around for a while there may be cheaper ways of doing it. (GT505 has only been out a few months).
In any case even if it was £20 that will be less than paying the rest of the contract!
I really don't understand why networks lock contract phones - they are pretty much guaranteed x months of payments.
Prepay locking is understandable as they are guaranteed sod all (except perhaps for any initial top-up).
One thing to note - if the phone gets lost/stolen/damaged after you unlock it you will have to pay again to unlock the replacement (unlock codes are linked to the phone's IMEI). This isn't a reason not to unlock - just something to be aware of.
