LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Just bought a LG GT505 on Orange pay monthly. Connected to Wi-Fi its fine but when i go to Orange World it still costs. How can i use the wifi to browse the internet on the Wi-Fi connection?

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Hi,
I've got exactly the same problem with my LG Viewty smart GC900.

I have spoken to orange who tell me that i need to get in touch with LG to be sent the wi-fi settings?!?!

The number i was given by orange for LG is 08700505123. They dont work saturdays .

I will try on monday and if this works, i'll update the thread.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

I'm having a slightly different issue with my new GT505. When connected just to mobile network (3G) the phone will handle Internet application fine (browsing, messenger, twitter etc). When I'm at home (with no Orange coverage) the phone picks up and connects to my home wifi and provides working VoIP ability using UMA, however not a single Internet app can see the Internet even Orange Home etc (I have tried with a neighbours wifi with same results).

Anyone got any ideas why with wifi I can get and use UMA but not 'see' the Internet.

Cheers,

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

LG dont have any settings to give their customers. Apparently it is the responsibility of the network provider.

The solution to my issue was to carry out a 'hard reset' of my hanset. This appears to have worked.

Hope this helps

Exclamation Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

hi
i have the same problem
i rang LG immediately because it was the main point in getting this particular phone
they say its only a problem on orange with these phones and that on any other network that it would work normally,
but do they do these phones on any other network ?
they said nothing can be done until orange decide to fix the problem.
so basically its a load of cr*p :L

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

I have exactly the same problem.

daibach - please could you tell us how you did the hardware reset that got your WIFI working?

I called LG as well, and they blamed orange.

I have called orange and it is with their technical support department. I urge others to call as well.

If they don't sort it out I will cancel my contract on the basis that I did not get the product that was advertised.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Technical support talked me through a hardware reboot but it didnt do anything except lose my settings.

They are looking at it again now but I haven't heard back yet, so Im holding off discussing the contract with them.

daibach- do you now have WIFI in your list of access points? If not I suspect that you might be still using GPRS for browsing without realizing it. Its very hard to tell though.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Hi sorry for the delay. It was orange Tech Support who took me through the hard reset. From memory, i think i tapped 'reset settings' in the 'phone settings' option. From there i followed the on-screen prompts.

BE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP ALL YOUR CONTENTS TO YOUR PC OR MEMORY CARD 1ST COS THESE WILL BE LOST AFTER THE RESET.

It is simple to re-install your contents to your handset after the re-set by plugging the handset back into your PC and following the prompts on the PC.

As for the access point issue, i guess i'm the lucky one who does has 'connect via wi-fi?' option when attempting to browse the internet (provided i'm in a hot-spot or am connected to a wireless network).

Sorry i cant be much more help except for the fact that after the hard reset of the handset everything works for me.

Good luck

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Has anyone been successful ? I called orange who gave me the run around whilst he googled the handset, not helpful. Called LG who stated they are fully aware and techs are working on the issue, but no eta on fix. Think LG are brushing it off. Looks like orange, to me anyway, are forcing people to be charged. Until the option connect via WIFI in orange world comes up I think you are stuffed, I dont see how a hardware reset would fix this ?? Also does anyone know what video formats are supported on this model ??

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

I am sure orange are at fault. However - are they going to care ? probably not. I like the handset and would like to keep it and considering most of my family and friends are also on orange, I for my sins would like to stay with them. The issue that I see is getting to speak to somebody who actually knows what they are talking about and not just googling for the answer. I tried a full reset with no joy. Orange has not only altered there browser but even if you install Miniopera the result is the same ! So its at a low network level, hence playing around with all the internet connection profiles, shows the same, no way can you select wifi....

I have wondered though, if it would be possible to flash the phone back with LG's firmware and have it open to any contract, however I dont know how the monthly contract ties into the phone / sim ( I presume its just the sim, but I might be wrong).

Mailed orange customer services, will let you know what they say. However they are busy and instead of 24hours could be 5 days.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Ok, an update from me...and it isn't pretty.

Ive had this issue open with Orange technical support since the 19th.

I have had about 7 conversations with Orange about it since then, each time with assurances that it would be fixed and that it was being or had been raised to the highest level of technical support.

Nearly every time I have either not heard back, or I have received a text message telling me to call back on 150. So nearly every time I have had to go through the menu options and support queue to talk to anyone. But that's not my main gripe.

The last time on Friday (28th) it really sounded like we were getting somewhere. Technical support admitted there was a problem (specifically that there should be a Wifi option under Access Points), and were going to replace the operating system on my phone with either the original LG one, or a modified version of the Orange one. They were also going to try altering the configuration on their servers to give me the missing Wifi Access point option. And they promised to call back. I was cautiously impressed.

This morning (Sunday 30th) I got a text message from Orange. That's right, a text message, not a phone call. It told me to call 150. I did this and as usual wasted my time sitting through the menu options and queue.

Finally I got to speak to someone...and...wait for it...the support issue was closed yesterday by the helpdesk (not technical support) without even contacting me!! Attached to the note was something about where to find wifi in the connectivity menu, which I did in the first five minutes of owning the phone.

I am mad as hell about this. It has now been reopened by the help desk, back at the lowest level, as if nothing has happened since the 19th. I expect nothing to come from it.

I signed the contract for a phone advertised as having Wifi. I do not have a phone with Wifi. Meanwhile Orange is actually benefitting from not fixing this issue by charging me for GPRS use.

I'm off on holiday next week. Before I go Orange are getting a letter from me telling them to fix it by the time I get back or I'm cancelling after 10 years of being a customer.

If they tell me I'm tied into the contract, I'll see them in the small claims court.

Timewasters.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

I found this thread due to another problem I have with this phone and as this is my first post in this forum, hello to everyone. I had a Sony Ericsson under contract with Orange and was out of contract, so I liked the look of this phoand and as I could 'upgrade' to it for nothing, I did last Monday and took out a new contract. Now, this thread makes for interesting reading, as unlike others here, I took out a £4.89 a month deal for Internet access as I wasn't aware that Wifi was an offering, but hey ho. I've downloaded the mini version of the Opera browser and installed that and it works a treat. My only grouch is that the pages display so small, so if for example you go to Wikipedia and search for something, it's a pain having to find the text on the resultant pages. Can't have everything I suppose.

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this thread though.

Shergar- yes but are you sure Opera is using Wifi?

I suspect it is using GRPS and that you will be charged for it just as if you were using Orange World.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

It is using UMTS at the moment. My full contract doesn't start until September 5, so at the moment I'm still faffing round on my old contract and if I browse, yes I know I'm getting charged, but I've only been playing a little, so a few pence doesn't really bother me. Under my new contract, I don't get GPRS (assuming that means GPS access), that would be another £5 a month which I didn't take out.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

pmcgoohan, did you try ringing them and asking for the call / ticket to be re-opened and an annotation to the fact the advice given did not work. Also I have tried Operamini and it uses GPRS and can no way use WIFI. As orange state until you can list WIFI in access points then you are stuffed. Personally I would like the LG firmware installed instead of the Orange modified version, I cannot see why a fix should take so long, its only running java, but as before being bounced around a helpdesk seems to be the done thing these days.

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

Hi mn283,

Thats what I'm so annoyed about. When I spoke to them on Friday they promised me the LG firmware, or modified Orange firmware with Wifi.

Next thing I know I'm having to call them back to be told that the issue has been closed by the helpdesk with no mention of a firmware upgrade at all.

I made sure the issue was reopened but have now given up on the helpdesk route, although I urge others to try.

I have just written a complaint letter to the executive office.

All of which is taking up even more time I don't have...grrr...

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

ok actually got to speak to a orange representative that was polite and helpful !!. She took me through the options I had of 3 phones and a then another choice, although this may be limited or cancelling the contract. None of these were appealing. She then spoke to a collegue who said he had seen this on another model and to disable the gprs settings so the phone had to use wifi. At this point she said I can disable GPRS for your handset, I said yes pls !! after the update I cannot connect to the internet using GPRS or WIFI (as expected, but did enable me to try everything under the sun to get it working!). So now I am awaiting a call back tomorrow to explain the results of my testing, oh and she seems really surprised at the fact no WIFI was mentioned under Phone Settings -> Connection Prefferences -> Access Points and then select WIFI (which is not there !!!!!)

Re: LG GT505 - How to i get the browser to use Wi-Fi

hi, have been keeping a eye on these post and me also have found out that when i connect to my home wi-fi, it goes through orange, and have phoned orange to ask why, they also said that iam not being charged, but one is being charged.(keeping an eye on it in my account)they have made a note on my account to keep an eye on it, and i also said i will keep an eye on my usage and compare it at the end of the month when my bill comes in. But what i have found on the phone is that the default for connection to the net is orange and you can not change it, so after all that have downloaded opera mini, and orange can sod off!!
