40W4000 vs 40L4000

Hi there!

I'm not sure about which lcd i should buy. Sony 40W4000 or the 200€ cheaper 40L4000 ..

So in the context of PS3 / XBox360 / BlueRay, which would be recommended?

I tryed both lcds at my local store today but I failed to notice any difference. The only thing I could find is the 3rd HDMI of the W4000 and the price.

Very sorry, good old Google ignoring search terms again.

From a side by side comparison on the Sony site Here there doesn't look like there's much difference, if you click 'technical specifications' and then 'hide similar details' you'll see the 40w4000 has a swivel stand, a 10-bit panel (as opposed to the 40l4000's 8-bit) and newer features like x.v. colour, a light sensor (presumably for dynamic backlighting) and the probably useless VirtualDolby. Not much to choose between the two otherwise.

So does the 10bit panel make much of a difference then? because I dont think that the other features will be worth the extra bucks (its 700€ vs. 950€ in germany). But I also could be wrong. I just dont want to regret my choice later on.

Not having seen either of the two sets in action I'm the most informed person to be informing you but I'd say that 250€ is alot extra to pay for the features mentioned, but to the person who NEEDS 3 HDMI inputs and a swivel stand it's probably worth it.

The difference in picture quality from the other features I couldn't comment on, maybe they make a huge change, maybe not... What I can say from the following review is that the colour on the 40W4000 looks pretty good to me and there doesn't seem to be a problem with input lag. Sadly I couldn't find a similar review of the 40L4000

No problem, I should point out that I'm not recommending this set... just answering your question.

In the UK, the price of the 40W4000 could buy you a 100hz set from another manufacturer, they are more likely to handle motion better but you may find other drawbacks depending on what you go for. Generally, if you want all the features and quality throughout, you'll have to pay for it.

If at all possible, find a shop which will let you test the set with a PS3 or a BlueRay (with camera pans or fast action scenes) and see if you're personally happy with it.

From what I've read (rather than actually experienced) I'd recommend a Sony KDL-40W4500 if your budget stretches that far, having said that it isn't perfect... Sony make even more expensive sets of this size which possibly tick every possible box but most people either don't have such high expectations or have to compromise somewhere, maybe you don't NEED a 1080p set for what you typically watch which brings the price down considerably.

I'd still recommend that you visit a shop which will let you try out their sets with different content and find out whether that extra money is worth spending.

The KDL40W4000 does not have any problem handling motion, even without the 100hz. A bad TV with 100hz doesn't make it better than non-100hz sets by default. I have the 40W4000 and have no issues watching football or any other sports/movies/etc in HD,SD or blu-ray. Also, I find the 40W4000 handles SD from my SkyHD box very well.

Don't get caught up in the numbers/specs too much. Get a set that suits your needs and budget after taking a look at the them personally (although that isn't always a true test if the store doesn't know how to setup a TV).

Thanks for the advice. I think I will get the 40W4500. Or to be more specific I will buy the 40W4730. It should have the exact same specs but costs alot less.

Good find on the 40W4730, I don't think they offer that in the UK (we always pay full price) but I would take LiMPiNg's comment on-board... His opinion is more valid than mine as he's actually using one.

Ideally the shop you visit will have both a 40W4730 and a 40W4000, if you're that lucky then try the same content on both sets and see if YOUR eyes can tell the difference.

I already saw a 40W4730 in one of our local shops today. But I will try to compare the two sets as mentioned above. Maybe they'll let me test it with a ps3 or a decent blueray player.
