I'm going to buy either the sony 40v4000 or samsung 40a656
I would like the sony 40w4500 but its a lot more money.

Which one shall I buy. My girlfriend thinks the samsung and i think the sony.

I know the sony has a 8bit panel and only 50hrz and
the samsung has 100hrz not sure on the panel bit
will i benefit from 100hrz

thanks for any help

I had the same situation then got the 40W4000 and haven't looked back.

I perviously had a Samsung (LE37R88BDX) and the Sony beats it hands down in every department, colours are amazing.

Not sure if the new Samsungs are good or not though, judging by the reviews of the 656 I would say they have gotten better.

My Samsung was bought in 2006 so can't judge by todays standards.

Definitely happy with my purchase though.

As far as I know, Samsungs 100hz is poor and gives weird shapes around peoples heads etc. The 100hz feature varies in terms of performance etc by the people who make it.

Take a look at the following thread for example:

PROBLEM HELP: Samsung 40A756 - 100Hz Problem Blurring, Ghosting (I GOT Some PHOTOS)

That Samsung is a newer model than the one you are thinking of too.

Yep, sure does.

The only difference between the 40V4000 and the 40W4000 is that the 40W4000 has a 10-bit panel where as the V has 8-bit panel.

Can show better colours on the W because of it apparently, whether that is noticeable side-by-side is a different matter.

Pretty sure that is the only main difference.

Not sure the V4000 has the PS3 style menus actually, not the ones I've seen anyway.

Shows the Menus on the 40V4000 on the following site:

Sony KDL40V4000 / KDL-40V4000 Review

Doesn't look the same as mine so would say they aren't like the PS3 and I stand corrected

Says they're a 'slightly cut-down version'

Re: which to buy sony 40v4000 or samsung 40a656

The Samsung has very good reviews as does the Sony but this years Sony stuff just looks like it's a couple of years old - what's with the really deep casing etc. My main tv is a Pioneer plasma and three years on it still looks cool although my Samsung has better blacks. (Freeview compares well on both - plasma and lcd btw)
I've looked at both makes for a long time and the extra 'bits' on the Sony seem to spoil the overall look of the set as a piece of furniture. I chose the LE40A686 because of the minimal 'picture frame' effect, solid reviews and because it's pretty good value for money at the moment.
Maybe Sony has better colours but as the Samsung is good enough, I figured the 100hz was a better bet for a smoother picture.
Can't fault it at present (Got it from Crampton & Moore for £655 inc 3 year warranty)

Re: which to buy sony 40v4000 or samsung 40a656

I am in the same boat - nearly bought the 40w4000, but can not afford it.
Now back to the 40V or the sammy 40a656

Input - erm std tv (until I get a freesat box) and lots of Wii and Xbox.

Reviews are showing Sony to be the better - but I am not keen on the TV menu on the V4000 version - sammy looks a lot better.

I have the V4000 and my mate has the W4000 and I can't see any difference in quality. His has the PS3 style menues and a USB slot.

I'm very happy with my V4000 and couldn't justify the extra few hundred quid for a W

can get the W for 669 - or the Sammy A686 for 686, or the 40v for around 550.

really tough decision¬!

Got my 40V4000 yesterday. Just one question, you know the digital epg that sits on the top when you switch channel? Should that be black and white?

Sony KDL40W4000
£669 - think its a great price - 12 month warrenty free delivery (upto 20days!)
u fancy one?

I have decided to go with the 40V - looked at them both today - not much in it - and I'll save £200 - that will pay for my PS3

Re: which to buy sony 40v4000 or samsung 40a656

Finally ordered my 40a686 there today after also considering the 40v4000 and the 40w4000.

I think the 40a686 was the right choice for me in the end. I think i shy'ed away from the sony's in the end because i had heard a lot of stories about motion blur and ghosting. The samsungs 100hz should prevent the motion blur anyway. And another thing, the 40a686 will be goin in a fairly dark room so its ultra clear panel should ensure that i'll get better blacks than the other two.

I'll be doin a good bit of gaming on them so input lag was a concern after reading hdtvtests review of the 656. However, some posters here claim that firmware updates have cut down the input lag a good bit, and that now, in PC mode over hdmi, theres the same amount of lag as the 40w4000. Its coming on wednesday and i cant wait
