Best LCD For a Gamer?
My 32" Samsung is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, and im looking for an upgrade during the Xmas sales, so decided its best to start looking around now :P
My main use is gaming via PS3, which is fed through an Onkyo 576 to the TV, also use it to watch Blu-Rays and PlayTV.
What im looking for is a 40"+ TV, to be wall mounted. 1080p, low input lag, under £1000. I Sit about 4 feet away (Yeah its really close, but im used to it now) so i think 46" Would be my absolute max.
Kinda rude 1st post, so "hey there"
Cheers for any wisdom.

It's tough to find top quality screens (you have a nice budget ) that are good for gaming but I'd consider the following:
Panasonic 42V10 plasma - top of the list
LG LH7000 or 5000
Sony V5500 or Z5500
Toshiba XV635

The LG SL8000 series have the best input lag for playing games. You can get the 42 inch model for under a grand, has won numerous awards including,
EISA - best product "best value LCD TV" 2009 - 2010
All the new Sony and Samsung models suffer from lag input, the Samsung LED's are even worse.
Im in the same boat as you, I would of considered the SL8000, but 42 is to big for me and 37 to small.

Cheers for the quick advice.
The SL8000 does look like a very nice TV, i love the seamless design of it, and all the awards look promising. Will keep doing my research though, got atleast a month to wait. The Super Slim design is also a bonus as it will be wall mounted, and with me sitting so close, an inch or 2 thinner is an inch or 2 closer to the wall, and further away from my eyes :P The only thing is the claimed lifespan of 60,000 hours, considering its probably going to be on 5 or 6 hours a day usually, but thats still something like 30 years usage :P it just seems pretty low to me.
I understand its hard to find a good looking colour accurate TV, that also has low input lag, as the methods to obtain one ruin the other.
Any good place to check prices? I usually use Dixons as they often have deals and codes going to save a little more :P

im also wondering if the LH5000 would be a better buy, its been claimed to be the same panel as the SL8000, just not a slim design, and with a 47" Being £700, its food for thought...

Someone else did mention that the SL8000 is basically the LH5000 with cosmetic differences. But to be honest i really like the design of it, but i'm hoping prices drop a bit more before i buy.

Its like im stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea here..
SL8000 - Looks far nicer, Slimmer, but costs ~£1000
LH5000 - Cheaper, 47" Size, Could be too big?
If the SL8000 drops to around £800, by way of offer codes or whatever, then the decision would be made, but if im paying £300 more for a nicer design and 5 less inches....
Also, the SL8000 seems pretty rare in the main shops, where they only stock the 9xxx models, which have the LED Backlight, which is uneven and has higher input lag...

A Comparison anywhere on the web?

To add another TV to the mix....
The Panasonic G10
£700 for a 42" 1080p Plasma, much better blacks than the LCD, and i have always wanted one....
Doesnt look quite as nice, but still looks pretty good, definitely not awful.

TTHis of the test indicates that the SL8000 has better input lag time than the H5000.

I'm really stuck on this too.
I was pretty much set on getting the Samsung LE40B650. Great reviews, looks great, good price.
I was told it runs games well in GameMode but I've just discovered in game mode it reduces to standard def if I'm correct? Surely thats going to detract from the modern high def games?!
I seem to read contradicting comments over Plasmas vs LCD's especially when it comes to gaming.
Can anyone go over the pros and cons for plasmas and LCDs for gaming if not all uses?
I want to get a TV which is good all round - movies, gaming, sport, standard tv

It does not, in gamemode it forces u to chose the normal color temp and some of the picture adjustment is disabled.
plus even in game mode the lag is substantial.
LCD is good for gaming u just have to find the right set that has good PQ and low input lag. so far the only one i know is the LG SL8000 and the Sharp 700.
pasmas are also very good for gaming but not everz plasmas has gooe input time so dont take that as a rule of thumb.
generally speaking the pannasoniic G10 so far is one of the best.

hey im in the same boat as you and started this thread a couple of days ago..
However, I am looking for a 46" tv. I also have Samsung 32 lcd now, but i want bigger and badder!! :P
Most people in my thread seem to recommend the Toshiba Regza 46XV635DB. I really like it and am probably gonna buy that one unless something negative comes up against it. There is also the 47" version which has 200hz.
I did a bit of research on plasma, and from what i saw alot of people have to take breaks, change channels etc etc. This is something i simply do not want to be bothered with.. I don't want to be nervous about getting screen burn or whatever its called.. especially at 3+hours gaming sessions.

Not a bad looking set.
Yeah, IR is what im worried about, 10+ Hour Gaming sessions are regular for me, so it could be a problem. But then i also like my blacks to be black :P and at the same time my whites to be daz white :D

true.. but to be honest, is the difference really that big? I'm still kinda happy with my Samsung 32" le32m61 which is 4 years + old.. When i game I don't really notice the blacks, and when I do they don't seem to be grey or anythin to me. But then again I haven't really tried a lot of gaming on a plasma. For me its more because i wan't a full hd and a bigger screen. I think 46-47" will be awesome for gaming...

I think a 46/47 would be my max at the distance i am, 42 i think would be comfortable.
Seen the G10 instore, and it did look really good. My LE32R83 was a budget TV at the time, and when on black screens (I have a black XMB background etc.) its a really obvious grey compared to the frame.
Gonna take some 1080p pics down on an SD card to test out the G10, and any other TV's that i know of and have an SD Slot. Need to make a list of all the product 'names' i need to be looking for :P
Comet have the 42" G10 and a Panasonic BR Player for £830, dont really need a BR Player, but i could sell it to my dad for a knock down price...

richersounds has made this tough....
42" G10 is £710, nicely in budget
50" G10 is £890, and would look rather impressive on the wall....

go with 50".. otherwise you will be going "oh i should have bought the bigger one".. but keep in mind 50" is very big.. i was in a big electronic store today and compared some tv's. They only had one 50" screen, but it really seemed huge.

Well, the choice would be obvious, but as i said, i probably sit a max of 4 feet away, so bigger screen = bigger pixels = pixelated
I'll post up a pic of my current sitting/tv area tomorrow, so you can see what im working with.
Also, not gonna be able to get this until after xmas, so maybe a V10 will be in the sales....

Friend is getting a 50" G10, and i must say its a very impressive picture when i saw it in my local Hifi shop setup properly.
I Can get a Pioneer PDP508DX for £700, having seen the PDP5090 and its AMAZING blacks, im seriously considering it if i can get the money together, as i wasnt thinking of buying until after xmas....

While the G10 is a great TV, I still wouldn't buy one because the judder they produce is like a cheese grater on my eyes. This is most evident on rolling credit scenes.
LCD's with motion enhancers are silky smooth in the same situation....

My friend will be getting his G10 next weekend, and I'll be setting it up and doing a quick calibration, probably watch a Blu-Ray on it too, which will give me a good chance to evaluate it properly, but as it is it seems pretty good.
Can get it for £969 if I trade in any TV, which includes a 5 Year warranty from Panasonic.
The Pioneer I could of get has been refurb'd and has a dead pixel, which has put me off it.
