Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA *Part 2*

Hi,

I received my W4500 yesterday and have been tyring to hook it up to the PC, but no luck so far. What I'm trying to do here is: Ati HD4850 -> DVI-HDMI converter -> 10m HDMI cable -> HDMI input on W4500. Result so far is a black screen. The Catalyst Control Center cannot detect the display, and force detect doesn't work either. Tried HDMIon.exe too.

Btw I had it working once for around 10 seconds on HDMI3, then I was like "cool, I'll plug it into HDMI2 then and we're done", and have been looking at a black screen ever since (on all HDMI inputs).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try looking at the display settings, I think the only way I know how to do it is to extend the desktop. I know you dont want do do that.

Yes I've been trying to do that, the thing already gets stuck at enabling the second desktop (grays it back out after 2 seconds). I can force its detection, but then I only get a black screen anyway.

Btw I had my ****** CRT working for years as a second desktop, so I know the drill (well, sort of). Just can't get the W4500 to work.

Before you take the gamble of buying a W4500, do check some of the online reviews;

Sony KDL40W4500 / KDL40W4500U Review

Sony Bravia KDL-46W4500 46in LCD TV Review - TV Reviews - TrustedReviews

In fact why take the risk? I decided to buy a better looking, better performing, better quality set and save a few quid into the bargain. Go and check out the Samsung range before playing the Sony lottery.
The thing is though the lottery thing applies too all TV's not just Sony. I have been through so many Samsung LCD TV's now that I have lost all faith in the brand. It's important to remember that most people only come on here to ask for help or complain when something goes wrong. I am sure there are many, many W4500 owners who have no problems at all .

Which 52in Samsung is that then? I'm looking at £1480 inc 5yr guarantee for the Sony?

I didn't even consider a Samsung when I researched new panels.I looked at more upmarket and reliable panels such as Goodmans, Samsui and the Tesco bargain of the week(brand unknown).No....you can keep your Samsung entry level set(BTW customer support non-existent) ...we're delighted with our top of the range Sony 4500......a near perfect screen.

Re: Sony W4500 Series 100Hz,50.000:1 Dynamic contrast,DLNA *Part 2*

I have taken a long time thinking about which TV to get some say too long. Done the LCD vs PLasma thing - then which TV, pioneer, samsung, sony etc. Picked the sony, then which model. Liked the look of the x2000then read about clouding issues with motion, judder (I watch a lot of football). Then heard about new 3000 series, again lots of issues re clouding. Thanks to Crisgeo, Lyris and certain others in being a voice of reason when the threads were dominated with issue about clouding.
Still with me? next was the 4000 series with talk of LED backlit TV's that would disperse the dreaded CloudsThen I heard there was no LED on the 40X4050 (maxsize without getting a divorce) So me and the credit crunch(the wife) have decided on the 40w4050 or 40w4710 as I will get it from JL after they have pricematched RW
I know there are cloudy sets and I hope not to get one, but I will be buying in Feb 09 knowing I will be buying one of the best TVs about today and worry about others things such as OLEDin the future.
Last thing to decide is do I keep on reading the threads or get out before any more damage is done to my already frazzled brian

I guess I will see you all in the new year

Cheers

Very good point.

However the W4500 does seem to be particularly plagued with problems. The furore on the forums does not affect all models. And all this for a premium priced (but not premium quality) product.

I've bought two Samsung A686's in the last month and they have both been perfect, and in my opinion a much better buy than the W4500 (even if youre lucky enough to get a non-faulty one).

Happy christmas to all.

Thank you for your humorous reply.

I did ask earlier (which no one attempted to answer) what kind of person would still be ready to gamble on buying a W4500.

With this post I think you have answered that question. Thanks.

Just for the record: my problem was solved by using a shorter and better quality HDMI cable. Seems like the EDID data was too weak by the time it got to the other end of the 10 meter cable, and so the video card didn't detect the TV.

Morale of the story: more expensive cables do make a difference in certain cases.

Cheers

I have mine working great using a 15m DVI/HDMI cable. Could it be the DVI/HDMI converter introducing unnecessary complication?

Oops just noticed your later post. Glad you got sorted

Only for hdmi cables with greater than 2m length. Below that a decent cheap gold plated hdmi cable will do just fine
