Re: Samsung LCD series A950 LED

What does the picture on 46" and 55" on the 9 series look like on sky SD?

I'm sure sky HD will look good on these tv's (I hope) but as so many channels are still in SD I want to know your experiences have been?

Re: Samsung LCD series A950 LED

....depends on the broadcast quality. Eastenders always looks shocking (but then I'd walk out anyway) but other SD is better.
Looks better than my old 43" Pioneer PDP 434MXE-1 (I now have a 46 956).

anyone savvy in the Service menu...?

I have the 46A786 which I think has identical Picture Quality / technology and use it mostly on Sky inc. HD.

For about a week I used an older Pana box connected by scart and was very surprised and happy with SD .. a lot better than I expected. I then had HD installed with the box now connected by HDMI. I feel that the SD picture has further improved. I sometimes feel that it is almost as good as HD. The other night I had a friend around, there was some film on CH4 and to demonstrate the difference I flicked between 104 and 140. Standing about 2 metres from the screen more detail could be seen on HD, e.g. individual stubble on the face of a closeup (a man !) and sure it was a clearer picture with a bit more of a 3D depth but the SD was also very good. sitting further away the difference became less noticeable. It appears to me that the quality of SD is however quite variable but never irritating and this is for me quite a relief !

If I play a Blueray I find myself sitting about two metres enjoying cinematic like detail. If not I sit 3 to 4 metres away and the quality of SD is great.

Is my 360 faulty (again) is the HDMI lead, although it works fine with the DVD player, or the tv. or do I need to connected it to 1 of the hdmi's in the back??

any help would be great.

Re: Samsung LCD series A950 LED

Seems a more glowing review that that of the 786

I take it there will be no difference in 46/55" version other than screen size?

Just watching prices at the moment. 1staudiovisual said prices would be changing this month when the new price list was released to them. Hence why I am holding off from making a commitment yet.

The 46" version would be the one being purchased. Even though when comparing the specs to the 786, and there being no difference in the panels, the 956 does seem to be getting more favourable feedback.

In the service menu, maybe there is some info there that may give an idea about the scaler they use in the tv. Beside the settings what else is displayed in the initial page of the service menu?

On the service menu of the Samsung 6 series tv, there was a line with MTK in it.. So I thought they used MTK scaler, which didn't have very good SD performance.

Re: Samsung LCD series A950 LED

For those that are still looking to buy the 46A956 there's a nice deal with a 5 year warranty here:

Plasma and LCD TVs Glasgow Scotland - Robert Whyte Ltd

Not used them myself but they seem to get mentioned a lot on here, and this is considerably cheaper than I paid for mine a fortnight back.

that sounds like a lead issue to me. One of my wall burried HDMI leads won't pass anything more than 1080i. 1080p it says "mode not supported"

There has been some discussion as to how the 756 and 956 compare and the 956 seems to offer slightly superior pic quality but I've seen little mention of the 856 and where it fits in.

I realise its smaller and thinner and aesthetically different to the 956 but it's the pic quality difference that interest me.
They are hard to compare really as the 9 series uses a different backlightning technology which makes a big difference. It would be more fair to compare the non-led 7 series.

Nice review.
And luckily no mention of a combing issue like with the 786 !?
Alas now there is a 24p stutter, which in turn was not mentioned with the 786.
Are these sets really that different?

Re: Samsung LCD series A950 LED

Hi guys, lots of posts on this and other forums of what the optimum settings are for this TV.

Would be great if someone who knows what they're doing could summarize the fully calibrated settings including service menu settings in a single post. Appreciate Pureffm did this earlier in the thread but I'm not sure if there has been any consensus update to these settings.

A couple of questions too...

I'm assuming most have gone into the service menu to switch on LED Motion Plus? Does this make much of a difference to picture quality? Does it create any problems of it's own? I'm lost why Samsung didn't include this option in the standard settings of European models.

Also, what settings are people using to reduce lag when playing games? (I've seen reference to this).

I've also been reading that some people have experienced dropped frames when displaying 1080p/24 video signals. Is there a way to mitigate this problem? (Layman's terms please!).

Thanks

When you send out the signal as 60Hz there is no prob and even the 956 will somehow recognize and restore the 24p cadence, this time without frame drops.
According to the HDTV review that is ...
