Re: Plasma/LCD confusion

Another thread where the OP's post/question get lost while everyone wanders off down the same old path with the same old arguments...etc, can we get this thread back on track and answer the OP's question.

I know it's mostly a personal thing, but would you recommend seriously looking at the Samsung LED sets as an alternative to the G10? Or is it still just LCD and therefore suffering from the same LCD issues?

Thanks. :-)

Unless you have a serious issue controlling light in your room, and I am talking massive windows that are south facing or it is in a conservatory, I can see no reason to buy one of the Samsung LED sets over the G10.
The areas where the panasonic looses a few points in the reviews are not really noticable, the areas where the LCD looses a few points are.

I have a B650 and a PX80 and the plasma is definitely the better screen, the G10 has improved on the PX80 in a big way so will be an even bigger jump. I also have a Pioneer 500M and I would happily swap that for another Panasonic if I had to as in some respects the Panansonic is a better screen, it is sharper with HD and with SD when it has been upscaled already, and once calibrated the colours are fine, god even out the box there not bad at all.

Where do you sit?? the viewing angle on LCDs is still really poor, simply moving 3ft off centre does change the colour temperature, so considering people worry about a slight green push from panny plasmas out the box and then buy an LCD makes me die, I really don't see the point of calibrating them unless you only watch it on your own.

I do however really like my LCD, it is a completely different look to the plasma but it is a fun screen. None of my mates think it blurs, or notice the colour temperature shift when viewing off angle, or even notice the lack of fine detail in the image, they just see it as a nice looking TV that can be cranked up when playing games for a bright punchy image.

I think the answer is buy one and enjoy it, after a month with any screen you won't notice the things that annoyed you, as long as it is half decent to start off with of course.

Re: Plasma/LCD confusion

Been checking the 42g10 yesterday and next to it was the 40b650 and have to say both looked very good.

If you check on motion handling the g10 is better as you will always find some motion distortions around moving objects, when you sit a bit further away you will hardly notice that but what is the point of a hd when you sit far away.

The 40b650 uses a little less power around 50 watts less then the g10, colors on both were stunning and also the blacks on both seemed very good ( lighting in the shop was like we have at home ) could see the dimming of the b650 with darker scenes though.

I was a lcd fanboy, as you call it here, but now I am in serious doubt of what my next tv will be. At the moment I think that the g10 will get my preference for now over the 650 ( both same price round the 950 euro ).

I will get my girlfriend to that place next time and let here see those two next to each other and listen what she thinks is the best image but I got the feeling she will pick the g10 also, it just sparkles a bit more.

Not exactly true - A Plasmas power consumption varies with the screens output whereas an LCDs power consumption is almost constant...so watching an average amount would probably mean the Plasma uses about the same or possibly less...

And anyway - who chooses what screen to buy based on how much juice it uses??

Arnold Schwarzenegger does.

For plasma owners It should matter. While an extra 100W doesn't amount to much in monetry terms over a year, governments are playing the green card. LG and Samsung Plasmas are in a fair bit of trouble California's tough TV power-use standard forces improved efficiency | Crave - CNET can Panasonic keep Plasma going on their own?

Panasonic now has to cheat the power tests. Apparently tests like the ones California use only take in account the default settings, creating a loophole. Hence why Panasonic now has dim default settings, and once calibrated the power consumption actually goes up. You can see this over on HDTVtest's review of the G10 Panasonic TX-P42G10 / TX-P42G10B Review

Default [Standard] mode 181 watts* Calibrated [Standard] mode 235 watts
The question is, could this trickery itself seriously hurt plasma sales? Surely the G10 sets instore will be on their factory default settings, so will look pretty dim next to a LCD. I've seen people in Currys/ Comet buy them without even playing around with the settings.

So if I were the OP, when you go view these I would have a really good play with the settings on both TVs.

Personally I would go for the LCD, simply because I take offense of Panasonic dumbing down the UK models. I guess they are worried about other countries grey importing them from the UK due to the week pound.
